Alfred Hrdlicka’s blasphemous and twisted Jesus orgy artwork spurs uproar in Austria

A clamor is heating up in Austria at this moment over a much debated art work done by Alfred Hrdlicka. In the said blasphemous art, the drawing shows scenes of the passion with characters engaging themselves in homosexual tendencies. In one of the drawings of the last supper, Jesus and his disciples was depicted as having a saturnalia (orgy) with each other. This devilish artwork was exhibited in a famous Catholic Museum, The Dommuseum by it’s curator. Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn of Austria has already ordered the offending artwork removed from the museum. The dispute over the drawings began during the opening of the “Religion, Flesh and Power,” on March 12 this year, exhibiting about 50 paintings, drawings and sculptures which shows homo-erotic themes by Austrian Dr. Evil, Alfred Hrdlicka. Hrdlicka who turned 84 this year drew the gay etchings in tribute to then Italian philosopher and award-winning filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini who rubbed elbows with the Catholic Church.

But even if the artwork has been eradicated, the uproar over it still rages on and is compared to the furor triggered by the Prophet Muhammad cartoons. This is not the first time that a Catholic figure was desecrated in the name of art. Last year I have blogged about the controversy of the Jesus Chocolate, which also gained unpopular criticism from the faithful. You can also remember that in 1999 (I was in the seminary when I read this news), New York then-mayor Rudolph Giuliani ordered the removal of the portrait of the Virgin Mary adorned with elephant dung and clippings of female sex organs from Pornographic magazines. He was so offended by the art that he cut off the funding for the Brooklyn Museum, which was responsible in exhibiting the portrait. But from these past offenses against the Catholic religion, the Jesus orgy art is the worstof all since it was shown in public by a Catholic Museum. In my opinion, the curator of the Museum should be fired immediately and send him to Rome to explain his Side.

Every time I hear news of people hating, picking and mocking my religion as a Catholic, I always feel saddened and disappointed. The Sin of the world is getting worse everyday, that respect for faith and religion is a rare commodity now a days. This is one of the main reasons why I kept on blogging, and arguing my way on some issues involving the Catholic Church. If they all have the right to ridicule my religion, do I have no right to defend it as aggressively as they attack my Church? For those of you are so tired of my rants in defending my faith, I am so sorry. I was born a Catholic; I will die defending my Church as a Catholic.

This is not art. It is an attack to the basic tenets of the church guised as an art. But nevertheless there are still questions that are needed to be answered:

  • Why did the Museum allow such blasphemous art? isn’t it why it was called a Catholic Museum in order to aid the spirituality of the faithful through art? and not polluting the minds of the faithful with such abomination and horror?
  • Why did the Cardinal’s order come in delay of the removal of the art, which was only implemented when the furor ignited? Does his Diocese have any priests who moderate and manage the museum? Are they unaware of the Sacred arts that will be exhibited on it?
  • What are the actions the diocese did to sanction the curator of the Catholic Museum?

You know what, just because of the carelessness and mediocrity of some Catholics and Church authorities, the whole church is always put in a bad light. Like this Video that was just launched in youtube, it again criticized the Catholic Church for allowing the exhibition of such horrible art. Sometimes in exceptional cases, i can’t blame others for attacking the Catholic Church, because of the stupidity of some Catholics inside the church. San ka nakakita ng Catholic Museum na inaatake mismo ang doktrina ng simbahan? (Where can you find a Catholic museum that actually attacks the doctrine of the Church?). Pag hindi ka naman talaga nawalan ng bait! OTWOMD will monitor the progress of this issue blow by blow.

Now before I end this post, let me leave you a simple question: “How would you feel if your own father, husband or brothers were drawn or painted having an orgy, and exhibited in public for the entire world to see?”

    late last year, it was JAM Montoya, a spanish painter with a similar art “genre.” ang kanya naman, mga holy cards na ginawang pornographic. Terrible, kapatid, lalo na yung ebs na lumulutang sa ibabaw ng kalis, parodying the common depiction of the Holy Eucharist in both species. Nakakasama ng loob, dinamdam ko rin ng ilang araw. But keep in mind, all these will come to pass, kapatid. Just keep your sight focused on the true art, on the true expressions of beauty. rather than being angry, celebrate what these “artists” have missed. celebrate what’s right and beautiful in the world. Sabi nga ni Mareng Doris Day (of the Catholic Worker fame), the world will be saved by Beauty. at si Pareng Augustine of Hippo naman, he recognized this Beauty as ever ancient, ever new, the Beauty that truly lasts.
    hmmm… preachy na ako. out of character na. LOL.

    Sayang at hindi ko naabutan yung video, hindi na rin available sa youtube. May isa pa akong nakita sa internet, switch siya ng ilaw na sa “ano” ni jesus nakapwesto yung on/off switch tapos may kaakbay siya na dalawang bata. Mahirap nang magcomment kasi mamaya baka may mang-harabas nanaman sakin ng hindi ko alam. hahahaha! pero alam kong mababait ang readers mo kaya wala naman sigurong ganun. :shock:
