The feasibility of IT education – the 2008 IT skills and salary report

Two weeks ago when I had my 3-day vacation in Rizal, my cousins and I had a little social drinking at the shores of the Laguna de Bay. My youngest cousin, Antonio, who is now on his second year in IT at MSE University, asked me if his decision was right in taking up IT Profession as his choice of career path. I said that IT profession (I think) is very feasible and is in demand now a days because of the explosion of the internet phenomenon all over the world. In 2003 alone, there were only a handful of people I knew, who have personal computers and laptop inside their homes, least to say, with out broadband cables. And just after five years, every home that I go to has already a computer in their house connected with either broadband or dial up connections. The feasibility of IT skills is very much true. There was a survey that was conducted by Global Knowledge about the Salary of IT professionals.

Global Knowledge, from October 6 to December 1, 2006, conducted the survey over an eight-week period over the internet. The Margin of error is less than +/- 2.5% at the 95% confidence interval. The report shows trends and relationship in IT industry and was not designed nor intended to be a compensation study for the specification of particular salaries. Some pertinent findings that the report disclosed were the following:

  • Average salary by Job function in which Executive management has the highest income

IT1

  • Average salary by major factor, which showed Project Management as its leading factor

IT2

  • Salary by industry in which the Military is only third from Government and Aerospace Contractor

IT3

  • Salary of all respondents in which the salary range of $65-75K surpasses other salary ranges

IT4

  • And the highest Paying Certifications in which a single Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCC) is compensated with a whopping $110,000

IT5

In conclusion, the salary of those who are in the IT industry keeps on rising periodically in proportion to one’s pursuance of continued education regardless of X-factor, skill and added letters after one’s name. That is why I keeptelling my nursing students before that Education is lifetime. Once you graduated from a university, the learning doesn’t stop there. Fitting to add that the more further education you acquire, the more chances that your salary will increase because employers seek competent and qualified employees.

With these facts, there is a sure future for all those IT experts out there. Among the most in-demand courses of today, IT Profession follows third among Nurses and Teachers.
