Prayer for the Damned

166

In the seminary we used to say the “Prayer for the Dead” in the liturgy of the hours to aid the poor souls in purgatory in alleviating their suffering. We used to joke around when somebody from the brothers asks our prayers for their intentions that are in itself impractical. We usually say “gusto mo yung prayer for the dead?” to joke that what the brother is praying for is remotely realistic. Of course we still pray for the intention because who knows, we are not God to determine if a prayer will be answered or not. Prayer in itself is mysterious. Sometimes your prayer is answered sometimes it is not. Actually it depends on the sincerity of a person. One lesson I’ve learned in the science of prayer is that God does not listen “solely” on the people who pray for you. He listens and look on the heart of the person being prayed for. For even if there are millions of people praying for you, and still your heart remains hard-rock, no amount of prayer would suffice. Today I read this news on the internet that really struck me yet left me to question the value of prayer and it’s social implications to the people around us. Apparently, 100 priest from Pampanga voluntary went to Malacañang to pray over the President. Bakit possessed ba ng evil spirits at kailangang I-pray-over?

The truth is there is nothing wrong in praying for someone, either evil or good because the Catholic church believes that every man has the capacity to change. Now, change and conversion does not solely depend on the outside. It must be coming from the inside. But how do you determine if one is really changing? Radically speaking, we will go back to the Gospel: “you’ll know the tree by its fruit” (Matthew 7:16).

As of this writing, the President and his mouthpieces has still in fact denied that the ZTE-NBN deal is anomalous. The Presidential tattlers insists that ZTE is still clean, pure and inviolate even though the stench already came from the President’s mouth herself during her interview in DZRH last Saturday. She also created a Legal Committee to consider the call of the CBCP in revoking the E.O. 464 which prohibits any Palace officials from attending senate inquiries. Unfortunately, the conclusion of the legal charlatans is that it is useless to revoke the EO 464– suffice it to say, they don’t want to abolish the said executive order, which is a fact that is not anymore surprising. Now the question is, is there any fruit, kahit katiting, on the part of the President who asks for guidance of the Almighty through prayers? I don’t think so! Mercy precedes justice. But remember, it is always Justice that must be served first before Mercy is given.

The numerous disappearance of activists and the trigger happy victims of Philippine media are just one of the solid proof that the President’s spiritual status is highly questionable.

I have no problem with the Pampanga Priests praying for GMA except that the timing is really not suitable and that it generates more questions than answers. It simply sends a wrong message to the faithful. There are more questions to it than answers:

1. How can you support (as per their admittance) a person who has never publicly admitted her family’s involvement to various corruption-related practices amidst various proof?

2. How can you pray for a person who’s power is wielded to thwart the truth?

3. How can you even stomach in believing a person who was directly responsible in bribing the Governors with half a million pesos as exposed by their own kin, Among Ed Panlilio?

4. How can you play blind and deaf to all the accusations hurled against a person where in fact there are tons of evidences to prove her culpability?

5. and how can you pray to God when there are hundreds of people murdered and disappeared who are crying to the heavens for justice, yet the very same person you are praying for did nothing to rectify these abominations?

It would be less of a shock if they reasoned out that they are praying for is her conversion and change of heart, but NO! “when we pray, we ask for God’s support, and so we support the President.” This has got to be the most fantastic Press Release that priests could ever conjure.

But who am I to question our brother priests? Sabihin nyo na kasi na di kayo naniniwala na si GMA ay corrupt para tapos ang usap so that people would not be confused as to whether they would turn to you for guidance or act on their own conscience. I am not a priest but I know where my conscience stands regarding this issue.

I quote from Bishop Soc’s message to his priests in condemnation of the corrupt government: WALANG PARING DUWAG! sa katotohanan.

But to this I say that even the prayer for the dead will not suffice for the President. Try the “Prayer for the damned”, at least who knows? it might work. But I warn you our dear priests, it is blasphemy to pray for the damned!

such strong words from you :D i’m still not through with your other series pero as i’ve told somewhere else, i wasn’t really aware of the zte-nbn issue until i read the link from reynz. grabe, nakakasulasok and to think na naghihirap ang bansa. why can’t some people be contented.

it only reminded me of a question i always ask myself during the election periods. why would a candidate spend millions of pesos in their campaigns when they’re not expecting more after they have secured their places in the government.

and how many roads must a man walk down efore you call him a man. hahaha, does a politician by any other name would smell as sweet?

Hi Army, I respect the public service you are providing dealing with these political issues and might I add, you present nice art as usual. With the quote, you and I discussed a related issue on satire and theology previously, and I deal with compatibilism again in my latest on thk68.
