Travesty

162

trav·es·ty [noun] 1. false representation: a distorted or debased version of something 2. arts grotesque imitation: a literary or artistic work, usually meant as a parody, that ridicules something serious by imitating it in a grotesque or distorted manner

I remember vividly the image of Willie Nepumoceno as he mimic the old strongman with his hoarse voice and wide eyes made chinky with make up. I can also recall the parody of Tessie Tomas as the power hungry better half of the late President Marcos. Surely, these duo fired the enthusiasm of Filipinos back then and helped ease the pain of their bondage from the conjugal dictatorship. But as the democracy of the country was reclaimed by the power of the people, more and more parodies came to the limelight. Such imitations often end up as political statements that either implicitly or explicitly vindicate the acts of the original characters being portrayed. But those were the days of long ago. As new technologies are invented everyday and new manner of satirical arts are expressed, Filipinos have been more than creative in dealing with the political turmoil of our time. The proliferation of online heckling, criticism and satire in the form of all medium best describes the subliminal channeling of the anger (and sometimes fascinations) of Filipinos to the characters involved. Imitation is still the best flattery, but parody is the excellent path to travesty.
