vis·ta [noun] 1. scenic view: a scenic or panoramic view 2. view seen through narrow opening: a view seen through a long narrow opening, 3. mental picture: a mental picture covering a wide range of objects or a long succession of events in the past or future

When I was a kid (barely in the 4th or 5th grade I think), I used to borrow picture books from the LRC (library) of our school. I was fond of browsing historical photos and books of interest. My fascination with worded images were an extra co-curricular obsession on my part that sometimes I ended up reading this kind of books on examination nights instead of my subjects in school. One book that I often borrowed from the LRC is this EDSA People Power commemorative coffee table book in white-hardbound cover. Scanning through the pages and reading every caption of every pictures inside it, I soon gazed on this familiar photo which, a year earlier, I saw it in the Newspapers as the famous front page photo of two nuns kneeling in front of the tanks saying the rosary. For years, that photo is the same image that flashes on my mind whenever I think about EDSA Revolution. In 1998, during my seminary days, I was buying this spiritual book in St. Paul Lipa. A nun with a mole on her cheek suddenly attended to my needs as I asked the price of the book that I was browsing. When I lifted my head to talk to the nun, I was stupefied.

It seems then that I saw the nun before. I know inside myself that she’s very familiar, but I couldn’t remember where and when I met the nun. I started curling my eyebrows and studying the face of the nun just to remember who she was. It was as if I already knew him since childhood. But being too shy to say something inaccurate, or to act as if I was staring at her mole or afraid to look stupid, I just whisked the idea away and went on to buy the book that I have in my hand instead. When I was already on my way out, upon pushing the glass door of the nun-run bookstore, I suddenly remembered who the nun was. I turned around and walked towards the nun and told her in a very soft voice (because I don’t want to make a commotion among the other patrons inside the store) “Excuse me sister, I think I have seen you somewhere before, are you the nun in front of the tanks during the EDSA revolution of 1986?” the charming nun smiled and said in a very meek voice “yes I am”. It was Sis. Terry Burias of the Order of St. Paul (Paulinians), the actual nun on the famous photo of EDSA. I went out of the store with a very light heart. When I arrived in the seminary, I entered our dorm with a smile on my face. They gathered around me on the hallway and asked me “what was it?” I answered them, while referring to the same book which I often borrowed when I was a kid and a copy of the book in our seminary library shelf, “Remember the praying nun photo on the EDSA book? well, I just had a brush with History“.
