Probe

159

probe [noun] 1. investigation: a thorough investigation, often into illegal or suspicious activities

Various media and broadcast companies were seized during the Marcos regime and were operated under the dictator’s rule. Free press was choked by the Marcoses at that time, controlling most of the news content and headlines among newspapers, radio and TV stations. But when people power came, the grasps of the government over these stations ultimately slipped. As the Church owned Radio Veritas was ransacked by Marcos’ soldiers, June Keithley together with the Mercado brothers sought ways in staying on air. They established the Radio Bandido which was the satellite station for the people power. Marcos was busy looking for the station in order to put the airing of it’s rebellious programs into a halt but they never found the hub. The never realized that it was just a stone’s throw away from Malacañang. Channel 4 was seized by the People and later Channel 2 in which activist Ma’an Hontiveros and singer-musician Jim Paredes hosted an alternative show. After the People’s revolt, the democracy for free speech was restored. ABS CBN was one of the media and broadcast institutions that was reclaimed by the true owners, which was the Lopezes, after the 1986 revolt. If not for the persistence of media for truth, we would not have the luxury today of watching the history of our nation unfolds in the very corners of our living rooms, even the awakening senate investigations.
