head·line [noun] 1. press title of newspaper article: a caption printed at the top of a page or article in a newspaper, usually in large heavy letters and often summarizing the content that follows it. 2. printing line at top of page: a line printed at the top of a page of a book or document giving the page number and sometimes other information such as the title or the author’s name.

Media played a big role in the event that toppled the government of Marcos 22 years ago. Philippine Daily Inquirer was a brainchild of Eugenia Apostol and Letty Jimenez Magsanoc who were both hailed by Time as Asia’s heroes. The Philippine Daily Inquirer is the only non-crony, non-partisan newspaper that showed the true condition of our nation back then. It played a big role on the so called EDSA people power mainly because it was the strongest published anti thesis of dictatorship at that time. During the Estrada regime, the Philippine Daily Inquirer was boycotted by Estrada’s pals in the movie industry through their cancellation and removal of movie ads. Estrada thought that it will be a big blow to the newspaper, but it actually strengthen the people’s perception of him all the more. In 2001, he was ousted, again through the aid of this historic newspaper. Today, in the Arroyo administration, this newspaper is still defying laws of dictatorship withstanding countless number of extra judicial killings of journalists and even the libel suit filed by the President’s husband. The legacy of this newspaper has catapulted freedom of speech into a level which no Filipino has ever imagined. Every front page of Inquirer has history written all over it. I mused that it is a perfect formula to document the pages of our nation’s recent history through the face of our nation’s historic newspaper.
