“My Blog Is Beautiful And So Am I” Yeah Right!: All About Blog Narcissism

It is actually alright to feel proud about your blog because it is the fruit of your labor and the result of so many sleepless nights and bumming around in front of the computer. It is understandable. But what is really annoying is when someone goes beyond the norm and become one of those who I psychiatrically categorize as Blog Narcissists. Are you one of them?
I just happen to be triggered by what my friend wrote just a few days ago, about her annoyance with those bloggers who actually ask you to vote for them without really introducing themselves properly or should I say you don’t know them from Adam and they begin to act as if they are that close to you. I totally agree with her take and I can actually relate with her rants.
For the past months I always receive such narcissistic proposals mostly in blogcatalog and mybloglog about their supposedly beautiful blogs. What these blog narcissist tends to do is they add you in their friend’s list and they will leave tons of messages on your blogcatalog account and ask you to vote for them on this or that awards, contest etcetera. Heck I don’t even know those awards exists.
To put it plainly, The term narcissism means …love of oneself, and refers to the set of character traits concerned with self-admiration, self-centeredness and self-regard. The name was chosen by Sigmund Freud, from the Greek myth of Narcissus, who was doomed to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. While almost everyone is narcissistic to some degree, certain forms of narcissism can be highly dysfunctional, and are classified as pathologies such as the Narcissistic Personality Disorder and malignant narcissism […]
Well, to be “excessively” in love with your self in terms of your blog and your achievements in the blogosphere is I guess, and appropriately can be coined without formal insertion to the psychiatric curriculum, as blog narcissism.
In my years of blogging and blog hopping, I have seen so many types of blog narcissism in existence but inany form not in the bowels of psychology and psychiatry textbooks. Actually to love your blog and promote them is in itself orderly or in layman’s term, natural and normal. But going beyond the norm and taking it extremely as something that a normal or “sane” person whom you know would not do (or for heaven’s sakes you can’t imagine seeing yourself doing it) is actually an indication that something has really loosened up on their screwed heads.
These are the types of Blog Narcissists that I stumbled upon for years here in the blogosphere. They are not myths, they are actually living souls hiding on the guise of their self proclaimed beautiful blogs. I took the liberty of documenting each of their types. Let’s just hope you are not one of them:
The Link Monsters
They are the first on the list because they are the most subtle. They visit blog after blogs and they spent most of their time online blog hopping and asking their blogs to be linked on your blogroll rather than writing something worth reading on their blogs. Their famous line is “want to link exchange?” and their favorite area of operation is someone else’s CBOX and Guestbook. If you have neither on your blog, they will contact you via your facebook, blogcatalog and mybloglog and give you their favorite dialogue. Alternatively, if they are too desperate, they will leave a comment that is off topic and will just ask you to link them up as if telling an alien invader “beam me up”. If you fall on their seduction, and you are too kind to be stupid, they will immediately vanish just after you linked them and you will never hear from them again till the end of time.
Cure: tell them “sorry, I don’t know you. I just add blogs that I practically like”. And they will not bother or visit your blog anymore as long as you live.
Promo Gurls and Blog Mascots
These are the bloggers who are very anal-retentive when it comes to updating their readers. They never seem to be contented with their readers subscribing to their feeds and will somehow clog your mybloglog and blogcatalog with their endless updates and beg you to read their stuff when in fact you already did, because you are not an RSS feed illiterate. Even if you constantly delete their messages on your account, after seconds or so, their messages will pop up again and you will spend the rest of your lifetime deleting their seemingly infinite cycle of blog updates. They are the cyber archetypes of promo girls annoying you with the latest products wearing only skimpy skirts and shirts which might as well have them carry a Round 3 cardboard just like in a boxing match and acts like mascots who are not adorable but just scare the hell out of your kids. You see their avatars as a spam advert rather than a representation of their blog. Their updates are more prolific than their blog entries themselves that when you gather and document them all, you can create a whole new blog just for their updates.
Cure: remove yourself from their community list and never ever join again their subscriber’s list.
The Aristocrat Hyenas
These are the bloggers who are delusional and drunk with their power and might. This is what I like to label as the High and Mighty bloggers who are direct descendants of Chronus and Gaea and sees themselves as Zeus, Poseidon and Hera of the blog world. They like to play gods in their own right. They like to meddle on other’s opinions and right to exist that if you directly contradict them, thunderbolts and tsunami will plague your blog. They will scorn you to death as if you are the stupidest among the bloggers. Their ethereal world is not of this earth but in their own created imaginations. You cannot enter their realm unless you wear a cape, a crown of gold bedecked with jewels and a scepter in all of your unused limbs. They do not walk, but floats in the air. Their feet are too immaculate to touch the ground. Opinion and blog content belongs only to them and to no one else. Your crown made of thin can or cans from “derigold”, would not work for them (Haha Reynz di ka pwede don). They are pack of hyenas that will devour anyone out of their circle. If one is attacked, be assured that all of them will come back with ten thousand folds of viciousness. They see other bloggers not belonging to their kind as outcasts. These are the bloggers who are so snobbish that they eternally suffer from torticollis or stiff neck. These are people who never accepted that they once started as a nobody and refused to acknowledge their humble origin.
Cure: Never force yourself in joining their circle. Create or find your own community and do not be dragged to their delusions. Your content might be more worth reading than their nauseating self-praise.
Self Righteous Monarchs
If you are lucky to have people who agree and disagree with you on some points, well be thankful because your readers are normal people. The characteristics of people who are self-righteous are I think self-explanatory. They tend to argue and argue and argue until you get lost of the main issue and be dragged to their ridiculous and twisted views of everything, concrete and abstract wise. They are too much to take for they will exert all their efforts just to convince everybody that he is right and you are not. These people are so shallow that a little bit of sucking and riding on their opinions will actually pacify them and will make them think that you are on their side even though it is very obvious that you are just pulling their heads off. They are so ashamed in admitting that they actually make mistakes that they tend to risk their image of being so passively aggressive and blatantly arrogant rather than bowing their heads in humility. They are more likely to thrive in the courts of the Aristocrat Hyenas and somewhat live and gratify themselves by mingling only with those who share their beliefs no matter how ostentatious they maybe. These people devour other people who cannot stand for themselves and are afraid of confrontation. But whenever these people find their match who often outdo their reasoning powers, they don’t bend. They just blurt the classic line of “you have a point, but” or “I know where you are coming from, but”. The word “but” is their ultimate escape to everything rational and logical. Therefore, they actually live their lives on the edge of their own butts, enjoying when people are actually climbing their butts and having them suck it for all eternity.
Cure: tell them face-to-face “Yeah, keep saying that to yourself” and turn around and laugh because the only antidote for these pseudo-intellectuals is actually laugh at them lest you become angry and enter the dark side of self-indulgence.
The Witch Queen
These bloggers are the green eyed monsters, the jealous types and the envious archetypes of the wicked queen who tried to poison Snow White out of covetousness. They have this magical mirror, invisible to your naked eyes and installed on the front pages of their blogs, which they frequently consult and ask, “Mirror, Mirror on the Monitor, who is the fairest blog of them all”. They get angry when someone is credited for an awesome work or if a blogger becomes famous or is recognized in a certain community. They will just stop visiting your blog, will not answer your messages and will just be cold and icy on their treatment with you. You will not know what happened and they will just dismiss everything as something you just imagined where in fact they are boiling angry with you just because you became popular or you gained a lot of friends in the process and she did not. What these people really want is your attention. They want you to always visit their blogs and tell them how good and nice they are, how wonderful their blogs are and how beautiful they are in and out of the blogosphere. In short, you become a rebound or a nicotine patch for the incompetence and adequacy of her magic mirror. Be very cautious with these people because they always have a poisoned apple prepared for you and tucked inside their basket full of goodies.
Cure: Ignore them and don’t patronize them until they become so psychotic that they will start to ask the magic mirror: “What is wrong with me?” (haha Baliw!/Crackpot)
Reciprocal Suckers
These are descendants of leeches and janitor fishes who suck your blog’s life essences in exchange of sucking theirs. These people are really good in sucking as long as they benefit from you. They are the total epitome of the axiom “I’ll scratch your back, you scratch mine”. They are afraid to contradict you in anyway lest you contradict them. They will visit your blogs as long you visit theirs. They will stop reading your blog when you stop reading theirs even though you are not living inside the cyberspace 24/7 of your life and have actual life to live with. They will promote your blog in exchange of something in return. Helping others without expecting in return is totally beyond them.
Cure: stop doing favors for them when you see that they are just helping you because they benefit from you. Make sure also that you help others without expecting anything in return so that you may not go down to their level.
INM Syndrome
INM syndrome is what I coined as “I Nominate Myself Syndrome”. These are the worse kind because they are totally pre-occupied of their self-worth, of their self-indulgence and their self-beauty. They lift their own chairs without any reservations that others might be better than them. They see themselves as superiors in a subtle kind of way. They are very impatient of waiting for others to praise them for their work that they often blog about themselves, themselves and themselves. Their favorite movie is “I, Myself and Me”. There are lots of blogs out there who are joking about how grand they are which is totally acceptable because it is their style of writing and as I may add, hilariously funny. But these INMS people are darn different because when they say they are the best, they are indeed dead serious without batting an eyelash. They always nominate themselves in different blog and web awards and they ridiculously finance their own nomination fees. They create ambiguous accounts so that it will not seem that they nominated or voted themselves. Don’t get me wrong, it is okay to blog about your achievements and your nominations, but please do not nominate yourself or ask someone to nominate you. Wait for someone to voluntarily raise you up on the pedestal. These people lack self-confidence and are totally living on acknowledgements and praise from others. Most of these bloggers win awards not because the people like their stuff, but because of connections and self love, and the hunger to be known and to be famous. It is nicer to receive an award if people are rooting for you instead of rooting for yourself. These people are versatile: They are the athletes and at the same time their own raggedy tags of cheerleaders — “Go Go Go Me. I Can Do It! I Am The Best. Rah Rah Rah, Sis Boom Bah!” Hahaha Sira-ulo!
Cure: Give them a trophy to replace their security blanket so that they can take it everywhere they go even on their beds. LOL
Oops don’t get paranoid, I’m not pertaining to anyone. The truth is, there is no such people in my blogroll and those who I tend to add in the near future. Because it is enough that I’m the only Narcissistic basketcase around here in this blog. One is enough. Two is too much!

can i add something if you don’t mind? The word is derived from a Greek myth. Narcissus was a handsome Greek youth who rejected the desperate advances of the nymph Echo. As punishment, he was doomed to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Unable to consummate his love, Narcissus pined away and changed into the flower that bears his name, the narcissus. (does this makes me an aristocrat hyena?,LOL)…nice item!!!

I guess it tells the truth about “us” bloggers, even if it’s hard to admit, we blog because we know someone out there will read. We link up because we know it’s the trend, we post photos because we know “it’s my blog, I can post anything I want”, I think that’s the reality of blogging. Without all these, why do we blog?
On the sidenote, I find it really hard to believe that there are indeed bloggers who likes to think that their blog is better than the rest, it’s as if the person is screaming “LOOK AT ME”!

You know sometimes, I wish some bloggers are like you, ronnie, jaypee and fruity, who were my first readers and who welcomed me in the blogosphere with open arms.

same here. i don’t really expect my friends to link me back. basta na link ko ayos nasa akin. Tsaka ako, i don’t mind them ifthey would not comment on my blog. secondary lang naman ang comments ha.ang talagang passion ko lang ay magsulat. for me i think it is enough. fulfilled na ako dunkahit walang comments. alam ko kasi na marami nagbabasa kahit patago. minsan nga through feed reader lang eh.
pero tinanggal ko yung full feed ko kasi diko makita kung sino nadalaw sa blog ko kaya lahat ng entries ko ngayon excerpts lang makikita sa feed reader. mas maganda kasi kita mo mga pinanggagalingan ng bisita mo.
napangiti naman ako sa sinabi mo na you know my blog by “heart” haha.
sana lang lumipat ka kahit pano sa wordpress ng makapag comment naman ako. yun lang wish ko. o kaya palitan mo theme mo kasi baka nasa sa theme yun. feelingko palagi outcast ako sa mundo mo haha.
pero lam mo hirap din ng sitwasyon ko kasi i always get into trouble whenever i post some entries. di ko naman mapigilang pagsusulat ko kasi yun ang takbo ng konsensya ko. tulad nito. another controversy na naman ito lol.
sometimes I just want to keep my mouth shut para na walang wala masagasaan pero di pwede kasi dun ako natrain sa loob. kaya I just tamper my honesty with prudence and tact.
btw, ipapa laminate ko tong commentmo kasi this by far is your longest comment hahaha. kakatuwa naman.

By the way i would introduce you to my readers - Poetic Morena is claudia. A poet blogger who is now assigned in Korea. She is not Filipino but a Columbian (am I right?) who has a heart and beauty of a true-blue Filipina.

Hi bluep! Salamat sa pakikinig sa Usapang Pinoy. Sa uulitin ha. By the way, I created a podcast for it. It’s on A Pinay In England right now.
About your post - superb! I heartily agree with the different types of bloggers. The only group I have truly been happy with in the Philippines is Wordpress Pinoys - although not all are as friendly as our little circle. (We missed you in December! Make sure you join us in May.)
After all, it is only blogging. Why do some people put themselves on a pedestal or think of themselves as lord and lady of everything they survey??? And a lot of them don’t even have the courtesy to reply to my comments or visit my blog when I have visited theirs several times and left meaningful comments. These people I’m talking about are the same people Malen and the rest actually don’t like, too.

Haha Doc I enjoyed every minute of it especially the vintage songs haha That was very witty of you Doc. Pasensya na at magugulo kami last night on air kasi ba naman yung ininterview mo eh isa pang pasimuno sa kaguluhan haha. Interviewhin ka ba naman sa sarili mong radio program haha. If only we have an access to phone in questions, pihado mas riot yun haha. I hope may part 2 tapos itackle yung mga hirap na dinaanan ni Reynz dito sa blogosphere. ang ganda ng istorya nun haha.
WPP is what I call the seedbed of potentials. There are so many great bloggers out there who are not yet recognized and if you will read their blogs they really have contents. Yung iba siguro nahihiya pa lang.
I wish our circle would grow because as I see it we are not exclusive naman. everybody is warmly welcomed. The more the merrier. Mas sira-ulo mas okay. WPP members are really supportive. In the contest of the 2008 humor blog award of kwentong barbero, most of the bloggers in the top 10 are WPP members. Ganun ka lakas ang hatak ng WPP pagdating sa suporta.
That is also what K said above and they are very true. It just so happens that most of them live in mega manila kaya they have the chance to parade themselves in different social climbing activities but the heck, they are as rude as Jonah jameson.

I suggest nga na dapat may WPP awards din para naman ma-acknowledge yung mga kapatid nating bago pa lang nag bo-blog.
The people that malen and the rest are pertaining to are also the same hackers and hecklers of my blog and photos. Block lang ang tinapat ko sa kanila kasi this blog is for everyone who “reads” and not for scumbags and delusionals who only blog about themselves.
Like what I said before Doc on my previous post– Goliath Will Fall!!! That’s for sure. No one in history who is drunk with power have withstood the fall of their might.
I will make it sure that I can attend the EB. Ngayon pa lang tsek na ang schedule ko para dun.

This is why Reynz is definitely coming back on the show. We have so much to talk about still. Of course we’ll try to be mindful of others, but in the process of airing certain sentiments, we may inadvertently make someone uncomfortable. But hey, that’s the way it goes.
I’m really excited about the May EB, although first you have the February 24th with Kengkay!
I’m the same - I blog because I see it as a tool to make new friendships. I have nothing to prove to people, nor do I have any interest at all in sabotaging anyone. It’s only blogging for crying out loud. But I suppose for those hurtful people, it’s their bread and butter and they want to stake their claim on this what they think is rightfully theirs. Oh well.

Though I very well know and understand what you are aiming at (or maybe trying to convey) or the person who you are referring to, yet let’s just comprehend that others are really not that intuitive and should really dig a little deeper when it comes to openness to reality.

Hey! I never saw this post before so I wasn’t aware that you’re trying to gain popularity from my keyword – narcissism. Now I know why you’re PR4 and I’m N/A. hahaha! Idol ko ‘yang si Narcissus kaya wag na kayong magtaka kung magin bulaklak ako baling araw but if I do, I want to be a Venus Fly Trap o kaya yung blood-sucking plant ni Kurama sa Ghostfighter. Hahaha!
