True Award
By bluepanjeet on Sep 25, 2007 in Grazie Grazie

Given the chance to choose between an Emmy over a meme award, I will choose the latter. There are things in life that are more meaningful compared to some gold-covered statuesque. Over the years, in my academic struggle to be the best among the rest, I strived hard to get to the top without pulling others down. I played fair and square. I Never cheated (except in math during High School LOL — I’m talking about college if you’ll excuse me), never stepped on others nor pushed myself on things that I never deserved.
When I studied nursing, I promised myself that I would get that “Magna Cum Laude” (modesty aside po…) which my former Dean promised me when I first inquired for enrollment. I never asked her about that award, but she brainwashed me into thinking that I could get it if I enrolled in that school. There was no proposal, just a nudge from her, seeing from my previous transcripts that my grades in the seminary are with flying colors, she convinced me that if I studied there, I just might notch the hole in one. So I did. enroll in that academe and worked hard for that award. Only to tell me later during my fourth year in Nursing proper that I was not qualified because most of my minor subjects were not taken in that school.
I cannot help but judge her today that she tricked me into enrolling in that school so as to get high rate of enrollees. She lied to me big time. That was my feeling back then. In retrospect, I was so angry with her that up to now I still do not trust her. However, the anger has subsided, but the trust can never ever be regained.
Since then I learned my lessons: never put your trust on awards or grades for that matter. Grades and awards are relative. Lesson in life is the real thing that matters.
That experience humbled me so much that when I became a professor myself, I always tell my students to “study for life and not for grades”. It made me realize that students need to be inspired in order to extract their full potential. They need to be affirmed in order to have a motivation to better themselves.
At this point in my life, I never give a damn on awards, not because of my bitter experience, but because of the realization that medals, honors and awards do not belong on your neck. You do not go to work with all your trophies, sashes and medals hanged on your neck, pinned on your uniform and tied on the hems of your pants and clothes. They belong to the walls of offices, living rooms, corridors and institutions. The real award is on the people’s confidence in you and the belief that with or without those metal and glass statues, you can still become an inspiration to all.
Awards just make a person delusional. Like what I have experienced, I was so delusional in getting the award, that I never recognized reality from mere fantasy. We are given the chance to fly on the sky, not to dominate it, but to be with others who journey with us, especially those who are learning how to fly. To be alone above is pure loneliness, pure alienation and isolation. It is happier when you reap something not for yourself, but for others and with others who also aspires to be like you.
You may have all the awards in the world, but to whom will you share it? It’s much nicer to become nameless and yet you know that in some way or another, you touch people’s lives.
So with all of the rants that I laid above, my only point is this: from the bottom of my heart, thank you for always making me feel that I touched your lives no matter how imperfect and unworthy I am to be considered as such. Thank you for the times wherein you give me such inspiration to go on with this self-proclaimed mission even though sometimes I am caught between my seminary upbringing and my activist’s nature. Thank you also for all of you who gave me a reason to smile everyday in my little window to the world every time I log on to the cyberspace.
For the record. I would like to thank Dom for giving me the “Blogging Community Involving Award”, to Rebecca and Ems for the “You Make Me Smile Award” and to Laketress for the “Blogging Star Award” and the “Awesome Guy Award”. They are really awesome. I will never give them up for an Emmy, Tony, Famas, Urian or for an Oscar, because like I said, they are more meaningful because they came from the heart and not from some bunch of high profile judges.

And with this recognition (and not an award - I dare make a difference between the two) I won’t tag anyone, I wont give them to any particular person. I’m giving all this award to all of you, my dear friends and blog mates. This is actually a gesture of gratitude for making this dream-project (OTWOMD) a success for only 4 months of official and technical existence. And I do hope with you, we can reach more people, to let them know that Dreams are free… you only have to make them happen… today or tomorrow.
My mission here remains the same like what I wrote in my TAPSILOG page, including the mission to help other new and low profile bloggers to be known in the blogosphere and to actually help them make a niche of their own. Blogging is for evryone. regardless of religion, belief and social standing. I’m proud that I belong with all of you who will always remain nameless yet full of meaning and content of our daily struggles to be human.
I may not have thousands of comments in a single post, I may not have the most celebrated bloggers on my platform, and I may not have a google-qualified traffic, but I definitely have the best of both worlds defined, aggregated and personified by the people who visit OTWOMD. And the people who are listed on my footer blog roll, who share their life’s everyday journey with me here in the blogosphere, in making a difference in the world
You are all the reason why I smile everyday: bloggers, readers, lurkers, posers and yes-even spammers.
“It is always the LOVE of our God (whatever name we call Him) that compels us to make possible what is impossible”
From a fellow nameless blogger, Thanks to all of you…
