10 Commandments of Driving
By bluepanjeet on Jun 27, 2007 in *Magisterium

For those of you who have experienced motoring as a hell, fear not. The Vatican just released their 35 page document regarding the ethics, morality and safety of driving. The document was released because of the alarming rate of motor related accidents happening all over Europe and the world. Approximately 1.2 Million people die on the road each year because of driver’s transgressions and negligence. The Church felt that it is necessary to respond to the challenge of this age, specifically which involves driving.
The document entitled, “Guidelines for the Pastoral Care of the Road”, extols the benefits of driving — family outings, getting the sick to the hospital, allowing people to see other cultures.
The “Drivers’ Ten Commandments,” as listed by the document, are:
1. You shall not kill.
2. The road shall be for you a means of communion between people and not of mortal harm.
3. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.
4. Be charitable and help your neighbor in need, especially victims of accidents.
5. Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domination, and an occasion of sin.
6. Charitably convince the young and not so young not to drive when they are not in a fitting condition to do so.
7. Support the families of accident victims.
8. Bring guilty motorists and their victims together, at the appropriate time, so that they can undergo the liberating experience of forgiveness.
9. On the road, protect the more vulnerable party.
10. Feel responsible toward others.

Though it seems weird that the Vatican entangled itself with the problem of irresponsible driving, but I think the 10 commandments it released make sense, though I deem it as common sense enough.
I just have to make a comment with #7 though. Most of the patients I have at the ER are vehicular accident victims. Of course, nobody wants an accident to happen. And yet, there are times when the one who got hit by the vehicle is actually the one who’s at fault. I mean, crossing the expressway?!?! But still, victims of vehicular accidents expect that the one who hit them, whether at fault or not, to pay for ALL their hospital bills, which I think is unfair. Also, there are cases in which the one who hit the car with another vehicle (a tricycle versus a Revo) and the tricycle is at fault, it is just fair that the tricycle at least give something for the repair of the Revo. But the tricycle tries to evade responsibility by saying he cannot be responsible because he doesn’t have money to pay. Then, why in the first place drive while being drunk? My point is just I want to emphasize the word “support” in rule #7. It doesn’t mean that you have to pay for everything.

yeah doc its kinda weired when I first read it too. The question on my mind was why? then when I read the semi-detailed content of the 35 page document they’re referring too, I understood that the main goal is to promote responsible driving in the moral ethical parlance. but in my opinion dapat matagal na nila ginawa ito di lang ngayon. The Vatican under Pope Benedict is making a great change in his papacy by reaching out to more secular concerns like this, which is really weird at first, but makes sense when you get the hang of it.
It’s true. Responsibility should be shared whether you’re poor or you’re rich. It’s only here in our country that “awa” is always practiced inappropriately. Though compassion is really a virtuue pero it should have its right place. Though mercy always precedes justice but it will still boil down in the end that you have to be responsible in your actions, that is to pay the damages, whether you are rich or financially red.
The government should release a specific protocol when it comes to this matter so that mahuhuli talaga yung kung sino ang responsable, mayaman man o mahirap.

additional, i got what you mean by support doc. its true. eh kasi dito sa atin ang gusto naman ng mga biktima ay lahatin ang gastos. you give your hand but they grab your arm. that’s really sad– nabangga ka dahil sa sariling kaengotan. ang hirap nung ganung sitwasyon kasi kaya ka nabangga dahil sa kasalanan mo din.
you know I can’t blame my cousins and my friends when some children crosses the street and then they almost hit them. They really swear bad words out of anger, just because these children are not well attended by their own parents. yun ang nakakainis sa part ng driver, nakabangga ka just because me aanga-anga sa kalsada.

Nangyari na kasi ‘yan sa friends ko. Actually twice. What happened was they’re in heavy traffic kaya mabagal talaga ang takbo ng kotse nila. But then a stupid kid on his bike literally rammed on their car kasi nawalan siya ng preno daw and he fell off hitting his head. In the first place, the kid has no right to ride his bike on the main road. Pero kasi ayaw na ng friend ko ng gulo so they brought the kid to the hospital, paid for his treatment, etcetera. Tapos ‘yung parents, they wanted to milk them for all the money they can get: for the medications, etcetera. Also, nagkaroon ng complications ‘yung wound ng kid, which of course, hindi na fault ng friend ko kasi neglect na ng parents ‘yun sa bahay, hindi nila nililinisan ‘yung wound. And now the kid, according to the parents, need to be “hospitalized” again for it and they want my friend to again pay for it. Ano ‘yun ‘di ba?!?! So when it comes to vehicular accidents like that, medyo neutral ako or slightly suspicious na agad. Because, yeah, not all victims of vehicular accidents are victims at all. I have lots of ER stories similar to that. Kaya minsan, nakakainit ng ulo. Haha.

Oo doc, Iagree. I have compassion for victims pero san lulugar naman yung nakabangga na di nya kasalanan? Your friend is still kind because she paid for the damage ven though it’s not her fault. Pero sana naman wag gatasan ng mga magulang kasi hindi naman lahat ng driver ay “BAKA” hahaha.
My uncle who was only 10 years old then (circa 1950s) was hit by a truck. He was on the sidewalk going home from an errand by my grandma, and at broad daylight the truck slammed into the lamp post sandwiching my uncle. My mom’s family was very poor then so they did not pursue any damages. Yun siguro pa sa kaso ng Uncle ko ang talagang may karapatan na magdemand ng damages. but, yun nga pinag pasa dyos na lang. And you know what? my mom’s family rose from poverty. all of them are all established now and have great jobs and businesses. Good Karma din ika nga.
