There Is Still Hope…

33rd

THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN

miracle

There is still hope.I believe. Though in my opinion, priests should not exchange their priestly ministry for the public office, but then again this is an isolated case. And who am I to contradict the people’s clamor?

The point exactly is, the people is hungry for change and that there is nothing impossible with prayer. So many times that history uplifted the lowly and the weak: Moses against the Pharoah, David over Goliath, Blessed Virgin Mary, Joan of Arc, Mohandas Ghandi, John Paul II, Ninoy Aquino, Vilma Santos, Grace Padaca, Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa, and Now Ed Panlilio… the list is endless.

Filipinos in this recent election also showed electoral maturity when most of the candidates known to have guns, goons, gold and glitter failed to win in the race. Ramon Casiple, director of the Institute of Political and Electoral Reform, told The AP (Associated Press) that:

“Although fans have mobbed celebrity candidates on the campaign trail, voters make a distinction between celebrities and leaders on election day”.

Historian and Inquirer columnist Ambeth Ocampo asserted:

“Popularity is an advantage but it is not the main reason [to run in an] election.

In addition, Fr. Romeo Intengan S.J. of the Ateneo de Manila University’s Center for Strategic Studies said that:

“There’s a forward movement, Intengan told the Inquirer on Friday. “[The recent elections showed] that being a celebrity is no longer a decisive factor in winning an election. You also have to have a track record of performance and ideas for reform.

Almost all of the celebrities who are political wannabes failed to shine in the recent election. From the Philippine Daily Inquirer, I quote:

Manny Pacquiao was “knocked out by incumbent Rep. Darlene Custodio. Despite his hero persona, Pacquiao failed to project himself as a serious candidate with fresh ideas for governance

In Benguet, action star Roi Vinzon and stage actor Ramon “Chinggoy Alonso failed to figure in the top 12 slots for Baguio’s city council.

In Nueva Ecija, sexy star Barbara Milano, who was the No. 1 councilor in her hometown of Talavera in 2004, lost in her reelection bid.

In Zamboanga del Norte, former matinee idol Mat Ranillo III lagged behind in the race for representative in the province’s third district.

In Bulacan, former sexy actor Daniel Fernando trailed behind two other aspirants for the post of vice governor.

Drama actor Christopher de Leon was in third place in the race for Batangas vice governor.

Singer Marco Sison was losing in the vice gubernatorial race in Laguna and celebrities Angelica Jones and Leandro Baldemor failed to land a spot in the provincial board.

In Makati, Lito Lapid lost to incumbent Mayor Jejomar Binay.

In Caloocan, martial arts star Rey Malonzo similarly failed in his attempt to reclaim the mayoral seat.

Former teen star Nadia Montenegro just conceded to her opponents in the congressional race in Caloocan’s first district.

In Parañaque, comedian and reelectionist Anjo Yllana lagged behind former councilor Gus Tambunting in the vice mayoral derby.

In Manila, two actors-turned-councilors Robert Ortega and Cita Astals were losing.

In Pasig, hardcourt star, Robert “Dodotâ€? Jaworski Jr., lost in a very close mayoral race.”

There is still hope. It may flicker from time to time but there is still hope. Hope that doesn’t dissapoint us. If only people would pray and work together at the same time. Evil will not prevail, even the most corrupt and murderous of all. They are only few strong men, but there are millions of us weak and suffering from this social cancer. To do nothing is to let evil prevail. I thought my fellowmen have lost their sense of morality, but Pampanga proved that it can be a blueprint for the nation to change. Its not the priest who made the change, it is the people’s voice that did all the work.

@ k - yeah he is… and Angelica Jones as well. I don’t really see any logic in their candidacy.

@ Ymir - I agree bro. even if the voters matured, the candidates should follow the lead or else we all end up voting for a kindergarten senate or nursery public office for that matter :)

i hope the ex priest does a good job of it. its not just a matter of good intentions as i see this ex priest is doing. and im concerned that this might be precedent of men and women in robes running in the next elections. i have to wait and see. he seems to be level headed and fair when he talks on tv. more than most politicians who generously sight a special message or relationship to give personal credence from their god/s

    @ max,
let’s hope this would not be a precedent because I myself believe in the separation of state and church. But like I said this is an Isolated case. Let’s just cross our fingers and support Among Ed that he will do better than his corrupt opponents.
