August 17, 2011 – various Cultural programs were set up for Day 2 including several concerts held for Catholic Prelates and a street concert for WYD Pilgrims featuring hollywood film soundtracks. There were also theater plays and film showing which rendered pilgrims busy and preoccupied for a while during Day 2 of World Youth Day. But the most extraordinary cultural program set up this day by the World Youth Day organizers is the Flamenco Dance concert held in one of the streets in Madrid. Flamenco is one of the most passionate and most popular dance in Spain. It is by far the hardest dance in Spanish Culture and has been in Spain for centuries. The Flamenco is a dance which involves the cante (singing), toque (guitar playing), tap dancing and palmas (handclaps). The dance is believed to be popularized during the 18th century and tracing back its origin from the Spanish Gypsies of Andalusia. WYD Pilgrims were treated with Spanish Culture 101 as they watch the dance and learn its basics and significance. One pilgrim from the Archdiocese of Washington in the United States said that if there is something a person should learn in the Flamenco dance, that is the Passion of the dancers. She also added that the Passion of the men and women who danced flamenco must also be the same Passion that Christians should live their life for God. There was this Flamenco Myth that the dance was so hard that a woman actually got crippled dancing it. Of course its just a myth. Below are the official photos of the Flamenco Show.
