wyd-2011-madrid-day-2-luxuryIf you think being a Pilgrim is easy, take a look again. Pilgrims who register for World Youth Day pay a fixed fee based on the economic status of every country and then when they come to WYD, everyone of them is equal. Whether you are from the G8 countries or from the poorest of the poor in a third world country, most likely you’ll gonna sleep on the same ground, on the same soil, on the same floor. World Youth day is the greatest equalizer in the world where people from all walks of life, young or old, rich or poor are treated equally and the same: They eat the same food, they receive the same kit, they wear the same shirt, they watch the same event. Actually being a WYD pilgrim is more of a sacrifice than a luxury. So if you are a frequent traveler who is always pampered in 5 star hotels, in WYD you will sleep wherever WYD organizers assign you. You cannot reason out that you paid for your registration fee so you deserve a bed. That is not how WYD works. WYD makes sure that your money spent in registration fee does not lack nor exceed the service it deserves. So for those who are protesting in Spain and accusing these Pilgrims of using their tax money to spent a week of luxury in Madrid, think again. It is most likely that these protesters have never experienced in their entire life what these pilgrims are doing for the sake of Christ, in witnessing the faith, that is sleeping on floors or on cold solid ground.
