August 17, 2011 – Hundreds of pilgrims in the yellow WYD T-shirts and sunhats were gathered in the Puerta del Sol square when the marchers reached the site. They sang “hallelujah” and shouted “Long Live the Pope” and “Benedicto” at the demonstrators, who responded with cries of “Nazis!” and “Pedophiles, watch out children!” Some of the pilgrims knelt on the ground and prayed. One Roman Catholic group called Hazte Oir (Make Yourself Heard), called on the authorities to ban the protest march, with a petition describing it as “an expression of intolerance and religious hatred”. (source- AFP). Pilgrims, nuns and priests who are passing by Puerto del Sol were ridiculed and mocked by protesters, chanting anti-catholic slogan and showing dirty fingers at them. The Pilgrims just walk on and ignore the slander. While others who can’t take the harassment either cover their ears or just walk away crying. The Photos you will see below are deeply alarming since People are barking on the wrong tree here. Their anger towards the Spanish government is displaced on Pilgrims and the Pope. Reminiscent of Christian persecution during the time of Nero’s reign, anti-catholics bash and harass innocent pilgrims, nuns and religious who just came to Madrid to celebrate faith. Let us pray for our brothers and sisters for their safety.

That anti-catholic protesters though they ridiculed us Catholics they will NEVER and I mean NEVER succeed they will ultimately FAIL and may God have Mercy on their souls
@Joshua – I agree. I just wished that the pilgrims did not anymore argue with the protesters. The protesters are emotional. any added provocation from the pilgrims would trigger violence. Good thing the argument yesterday did not end into a fist fight. I admire the Pilgrims who knelt down and pray. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a witness for Christ
we pray for all piligrims in Madrid and may God bless them and protects them from every evil, and also pray for Demostration Groups, may God give good heart of them, the Patron of WYD Beato Pope John Paul II always acompany the piligrims to success. and all Saint in heaven Specially Spain Saints in heaven will protect the WYD in Madrid.
