If you still don’t know by now, World Youth day is like the Olympics, only it is Catholic and instead of Physical tests, it is the spiritual aspect of man that is molded and enriched. There are no medals, only souvenirs. There are no self-glory, only Glory to God and there are no athletes, only young people who are as strong and as enthused as ten Samsons combined. In letting the World know that a World Youth Day will be held, various host diocese use ad campaigns to bolster awareness. During the early 90′s, internet was not heard of even in the farthest corners of the world. So people only rely on Television, the cheapest form of entertainment available to the world. This ad campaign for the WYD 1991 in Czestochowa is a classic example of a very effective form of awareness campaign. This 1 minute and 25 second clip is very simple yet meaningful: A group of young people dressed in white are holding torches while running in the middle of the streets. Along the way, young people they passed by join them in there run towards the Cathedral of the Black Madonna in Czestochowa. The torch symbolizes fire, light as the event would greatly bring zeal to all young people at that time. Special thanks to Mr. Simonzin of Poland for sharing this clip to OTWOMD.
