Pope John Paul II held the 2nd international World Youth Day at Santiago de Compostela, Spain on August 10-15, 1989, Home of the relic of St. James the Apostle. In previous years we don’t have any opportunity to look at the past world youth days. What we only have were meager photos and little information about the events which transpired before the explosion of the world wide web. Now, the world became smaller as people around the world converge in one social network after another. And today I ran across another rare footage of the World Youth Day 1989 in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The footage consists of a 5 minute clip of John Paul II arriving at the airport and then meeting young people and Church officials, donning the “Saint James Coat” with shell emblem on them. John Paul II visits Saint James Cathedral and blessing young underprivileged people waiting for him. Half of the clip was dedicated to John Paul II meeting the young people from all over the world during the Youth Vigil with the Pope and later, the Final Mass. Special thanks to Pej2010 for sharing us this clip.
