I have stumbled upon a very rare and old footage of the first ever world youth day held outside Rome. Most of the young people today have no idea of the previous world youth days when the event was just beginning to unfold as an international event. Seen in this clip is the final mass at downtown Buenos Aires concluded by then Pope John Paul II. Seen in this footage is John Paul II kneeling at the foot of the altar table and praying his thanksgiving while the international youth delegates gradually lined up at the side to greet the Pope farewell. In the background is the 1987 World Youth Day theme song “Un Nuevo Sol” being sung by thousands of pilgrims and young people gathered in the square while the master of ceremony roll calls the continents present there in Buenos Aires. A timeless classic, a glipmse to the past Glories of World Youth Day. Special thanks to Gustavo Rector for this very valuable footage.
