Nightline on ABC News, a public affairs program of the ABC Television Network have produced a special about the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is very rare to see such Catholic related topics tackled on secular shows these days. That’s why it is surprising to know that ABC risked in showcasing the Blessed Virgin Mary on its prime-time news program despite the increase of Anti-Catholic sentiments in the united states. The special is part of what the program called “beyond belief” wherein inexplicable occurrences and mysterious happenings that has been happening around the world are tackled as it is with in depth analysis and interviews. The first segment is about the Miracles of Mary wherein the host of the show traveled to Medjugorje to witness how one of the Visionaries of the Apparition heal the sick, including a Filipino woman who traveled all the way from the Philippines to Medjugorje in search for a miracle that could cure her Breast cancer. The second segment is the Virgin Mary’s presence among Catholics all over the United states; from makeshift street shrines of the Virgin Mary to actual apparition in Alabama where the Virgin Mary is said to appear to one of Medjugorje’s visionaries right there in that same place. We all
know that Medjugorje had already been given it’s official commission by the Vatican that will study and scrutinize its authenticity and truthfulness. Though many pilgrims believed that the Virgin Mary is actually appearing in Medjugorje even after 30 years since its first appearance, still many skeptics believed that the apparition will likely end up as a hoax. Regardless of the subject matter of Medjugorje which still remains as one of the Catholic Church’s most controversial topic, what matters most is that a secular show has taken interest in religion. In one way or another, this is a form of spreading the devotion to the Virgin Mary via the mainstream media. The show originally aired last July 12, 2011.
