priests-and-internetDo you know that the Catholic Church and Catholics are one big force to reckon with when it comes to internet usage? Apparently more and more Catholics are logging in to the world wide web and connecting to the Vatican in order to stay updated with what’s going on in the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church all over the world is geographically separated and the internet is the only place where all Catholics in the world can converge at the same time, reflecting the universal characteristic of the Catholic Church. Recently, Pope Benedict XVI commissioned a study on how priests use the internet. The result was promising: (1) a significant increase in the number of priests who use the internet and is still growing everyday, (2) 61% of the priest-respondents seek their homily materials on the web, (3) 25% of priest-respondents said that they use the internet everyday to download liturgical texts or liturgy for the day and (4) 52% of the total number of priest-respondents agree that internet is useful in spreading the Christian message.

Some significant findings of the survey conducted is as follows:

  • Majority of the priests believed that Internet can help them in their ministry, advancing their pastoral work, and aid in their studies and in their homilies
  • Majority of priests consider the internet as a place of inculturation
  • Majority of priests said that they used the internet to pray and as a place for spirituality, either in their own computers or in their mobile phones
  • There is no specific age bracket or demographics among priests who uses the internet. Young and old priests utilize and take advantage of the world wide web
  • Technological gaps in the use of internet somehow exist between first world countries and developing countries, wherein third world countries have lesser accessibility in the internet

It’s good that the priests start using the internet but it’s bad if the religion is “sold” on the internet. I mean, online “get rid of sins if you pay a certain amount of money” – that’s a horrible thing to do.
