Everyday, the world is getting smaller and smaller for Catholics while its getting bigger for twisted reasons. A sports anchor was recently fired from his job as a freelance announcer due to his support for the catholic Church stance of gay marriage. Damian Goddard is filing a complaint with the human rights commision against his former employer, Rogers Communications Inc. On May 10, Goddard tweeted this words “I completely and whole-heartedly support Todd Reynolds and his support for the traditional and true meaning of marriage”. It was reference to Todd Reynolds’ tweets against an NHL player Sean Avery. It started when Hockey player sean Avery went public for his support on gay marriage. Todd Reynolds, a player agent who works for Uptown Sports tweeted “Very sad to read Sean Avery’s misguided support of same-gender ‘marriage.’ Legal or not, it will always be wrong.”. Goddard then backed Reynold’s views. Goddard by the way is a Practicing Catholic and has worked in Canadian broadcast industry for 15 years. 24 hours later, Goddard was sacked from his job. Lawyer William Gale representing Goddard said that the action of Rogers Communication “cemented the impression that (Goddard’s) Catholic beliefs are inappropriate and grounds for dismissal. We also contend that unless it is challenged, this ‘termination after a tweet’ threatens to set a dangerous precedent for all Canadians in this still-evolving world of social media. and added that Goddard’s termination is a “violation of Damian’s freedom of speech and his freedom of religion — two fundamental rights that are supposed to be afforded to every Canadian.”
Damian Goddard in his recent interview said he stand by his decision because he is a devout catholic. Roger Communication through its communication director Dave Rashford however released a statement saying: “Mr. Goddard was a freelance contractor and in recent weeks it had become clear that he is not the right fit for our organization,”
The Decision of the Company to let go Damian Goddard is perhaps based on the hundreds of hate tweets that the Corporate’s official twitter page received.
Hmm so TV Culture allows people to say sex, violence and hate on television while people who uphold their moral beliefs are getting fired from their jobs? and its not even on TV!
I don’t get it. Twitter is a personal page. I know several newscaster who totally tweet the opposite of what they say on TV. So what’s the fuss? So we can’t anymore tweet our political or religious views even on twitter for fear of getting fired?
Anyhoo, here are some of Goddard’s latest tweets, I admire him for his mature take on all the criticisms that he got and for standing by his tweets:
Who else has the guts to put forth his Catholic faith over his career?
