In honor of Saint Francis of Assisi’s feast day today, OTWOMD is featuring the most loved and popular movie about the life of Saint Francis, “Brother Sun, Sister Moon” filmed entirely on Italy in 1972 by “Romeo and Juliet” director, Franco Zeffirelli and starring Graham Faulkner as Saint Francis of Assisi and Judi Bowker as Saint Clare. Featuring Zeffirelli’s signature lush photography, Brother Sun, Sister Moon was conceived and executed in much the same visual manner as his Academy Award-winning adaptation of Romeo and Juliet (1968). The film attempts to draw parallels between the work and philosophy of Saint Francis and the ideology that underpinned the worldwide hippie movement of the 1960s and early ’70s. The film is also known for the score composed by Riz Ortolani. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction (Lorenzo Mongiardino, Gianni Quaranta, Carmelo Patrono). The romantic soundtrack was by the Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan, which reflected the ‘flower power’ mood of Zeffirelli’s film and the cinematography in particular. Donovan also sang all the songs on the soundtrack itself. The composer Leonard Bernstein had originally been approached to provide a score but the plans fell through. However Bernstein used some of the planned material in his Mass.

Still one of my favorite movies of all time. I remember fondly seeing it in the movie theater before I was a Capuchin. I know it touched me, and continues to do so. Thanks for the remnder and for sharing it. Blessing to you in a special was today for being such a great instrument of Francis today with your ministry of this web site. I always look forward to it. God bless you.
Hello Father Martin. Likewise here. I have my own copy with me and I think I have seen this film more than a hundred times. And like you, am still touched by this film. I really miss being a Franciscan. Its the least thing I can do. I may not have the habit anymore but I have the Franciscan heart. And its so hard to shake it off from your system. Its like once a Franciscan will always be a Franciscan. Happy Feast Day Father. MY former Capuchin superior greeted me today via text.
