Oprah has been very ambiguous when it comes to her spiritual beliefs. She can be convinced by Scientology today, the next day she will be discussing some tenets and techniques from the new-age movement. Her beliefs are not founded on a certain doctrine or tenet. Suffice it to say, she believes what she want to believe at that specific moment. But in her Oprah’s book club, she made an unprecedented move by personally picking the book authored by a Jesuit priest who is living and currently assigned in Africa called “Say You are one of them” by Uwem Akpan. Most of Oprah’s choice of book in the past often delves into relationships, money matters and career, but very seldom about faith-related love and values. Oprah’s Book Club pick will surely hit the best sellers list as Oprah is very well known in catapulting an unknown book into fame and popularity. She even described her pick in twitter as “never made a selection like ‘this’ “. What makes Uwem Akpan’s book very different from what Oprah usually selects is that, its made up of short stories compiled in one book– a typical catholic collection of anecdotes and inspirational stories like chicken soup for the soul morsels of meaning.
