Never has the Filipino People and the world have seen such an outpouring of love and prayer for a former President and the first woman President in Asia. Her battle with cancer was not just a personal struggle but also a nationwide obsession to pray for her condition. Politicians, Private People, the Poor and the ordinary people gather in churches to pray for her recovery. Yellow ribbons, which stands for her defiance against the evil dictator, once again graced the streets of the country after 23 years. Her spiritual life is unquestionable. Her solution to every problem she faced whether political, personal or familail has been always the Holy Mass and the Rosary. Her quiet life as a former President was not in the political arena but on her numerous charity works and personal advocacy to spread the message of the rosary, uplift freedom and protect the country’s democracy. Religious leaders and even politicians around the world recognize her as the icon of democracy and a beacon of faith and hope in a country torn with division, selfishness, corruption and pride. Her unbridled stronghold to stay faithful to God through prayer has been very evident. Her lack of enthusiasm for limelight and self serving attention has endeared even the young people. Having said, Corazon Aquino was not only a liberator and champion of freedom but also a radiant light of hope for the Filipino People.

Her friends, colleagues, former cabinet members and even political enemies has stayed at her side during her trials and suffering. Pope Benedict XVI and Hilary Clinton send their well wishes for the recovery of Time Magazine’s woman of the year. Even a Catholic News agency picked up a story from Manila bulletin how Cory offers her suffering to God. With this, a question arises on my curious mind, “will Cory be later considered for Canonization?”

Probably this is quite a controversy, given the fact that the issue regarding the Hacienda Luisita farmers has not yet been settled and that her stance is still unknownabout it. Yet who among the saints in the Catholic Church did not became controversial at one point in their life?

But saint or not, sinner or not, woman or not, I’m still tying a yellow ribbon on my my blog. Not as a tag or a social climbing requirement, but as a symbol of my admiration to the only Filipina who portrayed the prophetic role of the Virgin mary in the book of revelations, and bringing it to life, with our own very eyes to see, that once in the lifetime of this faith-forsaken children of the brown race, have we witnessed,a woman who wore the color of the sun, crushed the devil’s head, why he in turn lie in wait at her heel

Dearest Madame Cory, if ever you go before us in heaven, I ask that you not forget to offer unceasing prayer to the throne of God for the total conversion and change of our Country. You have been an antithesis of everything vile and corrupt. Your weaknesses has become the strength of so many. Your suffering has been a mirror reflection of the beatitudes. Do remember us when you are already in front of the Triune God.

Tingin ko Medyo magiging controversial nga if ever she is considered to be a candidate to sainthood kasi ang pagiging santo tingin ko, kelangan malaki yung nagawa to propagate our faith. But i admire her for being an icon of democracy.

Hindi mahalaga kung napropagate mo ang faith in a widespread basis, what matters most is that she serves as a model for an enormous number of people whom she influenced spiritually to change for the better and for following her footsteps as a Godly servant of God

Ang galing mo talaga… ang ganda ganda ng layout ng blog mo.

I highly doubt that she would even be considered.. pero I liked how you compared her to the Virigin Mary… specially “Clothed with the Sun” as the bible said… hmmm – never thought about that before. Interesting.

i think she can be a candidate. all of us are destined to be saints. we can be saints just by doing little sacrifices. in case of cory she did tons of sacrifices. if the catholic church won’t canonize her, she’s still a saint. she is now a saint in heaven.

St. Corazon Aquino the Patron of Philippine presidents… sounds right… =)

Good Point Chris, but doing sacrifice(s) is not enough to be a candidate for sainthood. A person MUST experience a miracle from God to demonstrate that you’re indeed following his will. The Church must recognize this miracle. I hope that our catholic church in the Philippines should not be biased on this.

Anyway, did cory experience miracle?? NO
What about Pope John Paul II? I think Yes because he was shot in the abdomen and hand but he didn’t die. Many catholics want him to be saint…and i’m one of those.

i don’t find that insane. i believe she’s in heaven now, and that makes her a saint. =)

i’m one with many that Cory’s Sainthood is just a logical thing. let the process begin and let’s all see what happens. after all, hindi naman to HELLO GARCI to be a saint.

@Reynz – there is a five year wait. the process is very long. Haha natawa ako dun sa hello garci mo hahaha

    NAT’L ICON?? Yes..
    SAINT?? Absolutely NOT!

And who’s next?? Michael Jackson for his USA for Africa? Nelson Mandela for the Apartheid Uprising? Suharto and Schindler for their Jewish pro-conspiracy??

KEEP IN MIND, cory’s contribution was more political and humanitarian. it was never in pursuit of faith or anything religious.

anyone can be saints. even though a person is not recognized or canonized by the Catholic Church that person is still a saint, if that person died in Christ and in the state of grace. =)

Tingin ko marami pang filipino ang naka line up like Pedro Calungsod, Bishop Obviar, Bishop Versoza etc. Sana unahin muna yung cause nila. But for me if the church decides or initiate the process of her beatification, I will not question the church. Mas maganda sana kung mas maraming pilipino ang maging santo kasi isa pa lang santo natin. But for me, I think we have to wait for the right time kung anong loobin ng simbahan.

@Jun – And to add to what you said.. it will take so many years before she even be proclaimed a saint. Baka nga patay na tayo di pa sya nagiging santo its because it depends on the process. And you are right. we should leave the matter to the Church Authority. Any rants or skepticism will bring no fuit to blocking the cause of her sainthood. It might even benefit her cause because the more the saint is controversial the more people seek these future saints for help in prayer. Good or bad publicity is still good.

I think Jaime does not have any idea of what a Saint is.

Cory will not be canonized for her political achievements, but for her love for God and heroic virtues. Saints are not people who do miracles, cure the sick while they are alive. They are sinners too you know. Lorenzo Ruiz was a fugitive. Pedro Calungsod a mission assistant. They all became Saints because they loved God to a heroic extent.

Nino, thank God you commented. I was not replying to jaime’s comments because he doesnt have a clue of what he is talking about. Actually Im preparing an extensive article about the process of canonization and the characteristics why Aquino is a suitable candidate for sainthood.

All people regardless of political achievemsnt can become saints. When their cause is forwarded on the congregation for the causes of the saints, the panel will look into the christian virtues and not on achievemnst. In the case of Cory, her moral and christian virtues and not her being a president.

I was compelled to write an extensive article which will be posted here soon because many filipinos doesnt have any Idea about the process of Canonization and have so many misconceptions about Aquino, even going further as to criticize her performance during her presidency as a requisite or stumbling block to declare her as a saint

Thank you for commenting. It is a breathe of fresh air from so many skeptics who plague this post. I hope to finish the post in time tomorrow morning.

    God Bless

let me play the role of the devil’s advocate here (i know extinct na sya hahahaha!)

pano ung hacienda luisita massacre? ung role ni cory dun? parang silent lang sya dun eh. . .

Do you think Ninoy also practiced heroic virtues? it would be nice to have a Filipino couple as saints. . .
