With the outbreak of the swine flu in Mexico, millions of Mexicans were forced to attend mass via their television set as fears of further contamination and contagion envelopes the country. The usually jampacked Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe was emptied on Sunday and was only filled by dozens of mask wearing priests, nuns and reporters. The spotlights were attached on cranes as Mexico City Archbishop, Cardinal Norberto Rivera, gave a sermon that echoed in the empty chamber of the gargantuan Basilica. This is the first time that the Basilica has experienced such absence from the faithful.
During his homily, Cardinal Rivera urged the faithful to obey the government sanction on public assembly in lieu of the H1N1 flu virus, which as of this writing, has already killed 26 people and infected 701 others. The new flu strain, commonly known as swine flu even though experts say it cannot be caught from pigs, has now spread to over 1,000 people in 20 countries.
Some of the changes implemented in Catholic Mexico in the recent days were:
But not all Mexican Catholics were happy in the changes that occurred this past week. Teresa Rodriguez, 50 said on Faithworld
“I don’t agree with this, because we are in God’s hands and we should be celebrating Mass, If God saved the lepers, isn’t he going to save us?”
Hmmm. She has a point. But in thei particular issue, two priorities are gonna clash: The Health Priority or the Spiritual Life of the people. I have no answer. All I know is that both faith and health should stand side by side with each other.
bluepanjeet: I am an ex-capuchin seminarian who dream. I dream of becoming someone of service to my fellowmen. Though limited and often held by my own whims and caprices, humanness, flaws, warts and all, I’m striving to make my journey a meaningful and fruitful one. I try to make my dream inside and not outside of the world I am living in. My dream is simple, insignificant to others and trivial to some, but I dare take the leap against the flow the society’s standards. I dream big, but I start from small steps. I look at the big picture, but begin with the tiniest of all details. I do extraordinary things in the ordinariness of all events. Like Francis of Assisi before me, I have a dream, a simple and small dream. This blog is the start of a much bigger dream, a realization, an effort to make a difference in the world and its inhabitants. Join me as I journey in the secular world, blogging about my daily traversals which are often times accompanied by the moral lessons of life's humor and irony, the integration of the human and the Divine, my search for my proper place in the greater scheme of things and my never ending flight towards my aspirations, yearnings and goals On The Wings Of My Dream.

Jorges latest blog entry..Ang Pinas, bow!
Indeed ero latest updtae is that mexicans can now go out of their houses
It is sad that this thing happened in Mexico and the whole while world. Let us pray that the H1N1 scare dies out. I agree that health and faith must come hand and hand. However, some people ridicule the Catholic Church, saying that fact that people can not go to mass is a vindication that there is no Jesus. He couldn’t protect His flock from the H1N1 when attending the mass.
Hohum!
