The Nativity Story is a 2006 drama film starring Keisha Castle-Hughes and Shohreh Aghdashloo. Filming began on May 1, 2006 in Matera, Italy and in Morocco. New Line Cinema released it on December 1, 2006 in the United States and one week later on December 8 in the European Union. The film made history as being the first film ever to stage its world premiere in the Vatican City. The film opened to a modest first weekend box office of $8 million, but its weekend draw over the extended Christmas weekend increased by 39%. The movie closed out with just under $40 million domestically. Worldwide, it grossed approximately $44.3 million. The movie received negative reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 38% ranking, with the consensus “The Nativity Story is a dull retelling of a well-worn tale with the look and feel of a high-school production.” The Nostalgia Critic, however, ranked it 6th on his list for The Return of the Christmas Specials. I think those who gave a negative rating on this movie in rotten tomatoes are neither catholic of Christian. One cannot appreciate this movie if one doesn’t have any faith at all and a deep understanding about the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Regardless of this rating, for me this movie does not only move souls, but also gives a glimpse on the human side of the Mother of God.
