After the John Paul II’s trip from Jamaica and the Yucatan area of Mexico, he proceeded to Denver, Colorado for the WYD of 1993. An estimated 500,000 pilgrims swarmed Denver surpassing the 300,000 expected participants. On food alone, $28.7 Million were spent by the pilgrims. But the large number of participants overshadowed the volunteers. The WYD 1993 organizers were expecting 7,000 volunteers but it turned out that only 3,000 were able to sign up. They were in dire need of drivers, errand runners, escorts, hospitality workers, traffic and crowd control. But this lack of man power were overcome by the miracle of helping hands just like what Jesus did on the loaves of bread and pieces of fish during his sermon on the mount. Like any other WYD, Denver’s 1993 event was also memorable, ecstatic and poured so many tears by the young people especially the handicapped. Everywhere you turn to, whenever JP II is around, people where crying in joy. Can’t really explain this phenomenon even though I myself experienced it first hand.
