Ever wonder when the first World Youth Day was formally held? This particular event in 1985 paved the way for the international celebration around the world. From that same year, 300,000 youths from around the world highlighted the Pope’s invitation to gather at St. Peter’s Square to celebrate with him the reflection of Christ’s passion, death and resurrection. After this successful stint in Rome, other countries began hosting the event at the request of the pontiff himself. In this particular post, you will witness the never before seen photos of World Youth Day during 1985, 10 years earlier than that of the WYD in Manila and 20 years ago from Cologne’s WYD. The dress, the eye glasses, the styles where all too familiar for the 80′s babies. But the spirit that guided the WYD through the years were one and the same.
