Exit Lando, Enter Mina

Last year, in the absence of my family (they were in the US), and in my journey alone here in this very same house, I experienced three super typhoons in the solitude of my existence. I had no electricity for a month because the typhoon Reming and Milenyo hit our Province and nearby Bicol big time that it knocked off 6 of the Electric post in our street. It was like a domino effect. Not to mention the keloid scar on my right arm due to a slash from a flying roof while I was rescuing a neighbor from a same accident. I was like Keanu Reeves in the Matrix, avoiding the flying roofs that are dragged by the anger of the howling wind while I bent my self in slow motion.

And as I was reviewing my Genito-Urinary MS, I heard on DZRH (my dad is a big fan) that there is a typhoon hitting again our province. I immediately googled the Typhoon Mina (International name:Mitag) and saw this image on PAGASA. “Look at the size of this typhoon, I have to blog this” I said to myself. Last year I wasn’t able to blog about the three typhoons until after the storm was over. now I should grab the chance before electricity is cut off again.

As of this writing, Inquirer.net latest report on the tropical storm is as follows:

“Tropical storm “Mina” (international codename: Mitag) is now a typhoon as it moves closer to the country on Thursday, and as disaster officials prepare to evacuate thousands at risk from landslides and storm surge.

As of 10 a.m., “Mina” was located 490 kilometers east of Virac town in Catanduanes province. The storm packs maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 150 kilometers per hour, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

Earlier in the day, PAGASA chief Prisco Nilo said ?Mina? could change its track and make landfall in Central or Northern Luzon instead of the Bicol Region based on previous forecasts.

?Mina? is forecast to be 180 kilometers east of Virac by Friday morning, 40 kilometers east of Daet town, Camarines Norte by Saturday morning, and 60 kilometers west of Tayabas town, Quezon province by Sunday morning, PAGASA said.

Public Storm Signal number 2 has been raised in Catanduanes province, while signal number 1 was declared in the Camarines provinces, Sorsogon, Albay, southern Quezon, and Polilio Island.

“Mina” will come less than a week after tropical storm “Lando” (international codename: Hagibis) ravaged the Visayas and northern Mindanao, leaving 10 people dead, 11 wounded, and six missing according to the NDCC.

However, Tropical Storm “Mina” (international codename: Mitag) could change its course and make landfall in Central or Northern Luzon, instead of the Bicol Region as forecast earlier, the chief state weather forecaster said Thursday.

“The storm hitting Bicol is our official track line, but we have a second scenario. We are looking at the possibility that it would veer towards Central and Northern Luzon, based on forecast models,” Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Director Prisco Nilo said.

Nilo said there was a “possibility” that “Mina” could strengthen into a super typhoon since it has two more days to gather strength in open sea before hitting land.

Should the storm hit the Bicol, Nilo said it would make landfall in the northern portion of the region by Saturday morning. But if it changes direction, it could hit Aurora or Isabela province on Sunday morning.”

It was raining here non-stop since Saturday up to now. Today the atmosphere here is very quiet. very calm. It is as if nothing disturbing would happen. But beginning this evening, Tropical Mina will grace our province once again and this time its coming from the south. The calm of the atmosphere is a prelude to the coming chaos. It’s the deep breath before the great plunge. It will be strong i’m sure because there will be no barrier against this storm.

Usually when storms come from the north, we are not affected because we are often sheltered by Mt. Banahaw. Strong typhoon winds are often crushed by the mighty presence of the mystical mountain. But this time, Mina coming from the Bicol region towards our province is surely scary because we are naked of protection.

Lucena City is a natural catch basin, if not for our large and wide rivers and clean sewers, we could have ended up as the flood capital of the Philippines. We are below sea level and are often the route of the waters coming from theBanahaw channels. I pray that “Bathala” (God) would protect us and also the Bicol region from this 140Kph Storm and still gaining strength as it nears the land of Virac Catanduanes…

As of this writing, PAGASA reported that the point of entry of Mina will be the Alabat Islands, just south of Lucena City and will directly hit the Bondoc Peninsula (Southern Quezon) and Marinduque Island. If ever OTWOMD have no updates till Sunday night, it just means that there is a power outage here in our area.

Tonight, It’s signal no.1 here, tomorrow night, who knows… Pray for us…
