Some people are just not that hungry for awards
By bluepanjeet on Sep 7, 2008 in Analyze This, Featured

Awards are actual recognition of a certain feat, skill or talent by a person, institution or group which spells excellence in their field. Awards may come in different forms, shapes and sizes. Usually awards take the form of trophies, titles, certificates, commemorative plaques, medals, badges, pins or ribbons, and sometimes a monetary prize. Some prominent and famous awards that we know today are the Academy Awards, which recognizes the excellence in the film genre, the American Music Awards, which recognizes the excellence of musicians, the Nobel Prize, which are given to people who have contributed a greater good to humanity and of course the Olympics, which recognizes the best of the best in all types of sports. But even these well established awards are not exempted from scrutiny and controversy. The Academy Awards has gained notoriety every year for different controversies. The Olympics on the other hand has gained the reputation for being the consistent center of political and social issues. But does these awards really matter?
David Guterson, a multi-awarded author of the book Snow Falling on Cedars, which sold over 4 Million copies said “It doesn’t matter who you are, how many awards you’ve won, how popular you are, or how much critical acclaim you’ve had”.
Minnie Driver, an Oscar Nominee also said in her interview, “you can never be guaranteed good roles because of an award”, which is so true. People are so blinded by these awards that they often forget that it has no bearing of whatsoever in terms of performance and skill. How many times we’ve been disappointed by such awards, giving the trophy to the less deserved nominee.
In 2001 and 2002 alone, the Oscars failed to fall on the lap of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy’s Fellowship of the Ring and the Two Towers installment just because it was a fantasy fiction adventure, yet it was obvious that the film was really a phenomenon, a milestone in cinematographic history and an achievement of an independent film. But in 2003, the Academy was pressured by the worldwide fans of the Trilogy that they can’t help but overcome the tradition and gave the Oscars to the last installment of the movie called “The Return of the King”. To date, the said film is the only Fantasy Adventure to have won as Best Picture, thanks to the clamoring public and Internet forums.
Sometimes we thought that awards are the beginning of a bright future, raking fame and glory on that 5 minute speech on stage will get us to the top. But most of the multi-awarded performers think otherwise. Chantal Kreviazuk, a multi-awarded singer song writer has this to say, “The flattery is nice, but awards don’t add up to writing quality songs, awards don’t spark sales as much as you’d think”.
While Natalie Portman, an actor who made it to Harvard and has been the youngest member of the 61st Annual Cannes Film Festival jury said “Awards are so unnecessary, because I think we get so much out of our work just by doing it. The work is a reward in itself.”
Though we have seen a number of awardee who truly deserve to win but the undeserved actually over weighs the former. Here in the Philippines alone, awards are a laughing stock in the Film Industry. The Manila Film Festival has often awarded the best Picture the highest earning movie regardless whether the film is totally ostentatious or just plain unrealistic. While in awards for television are given to the network that has a majority of press jury who are affiliated to the network resulting to network biases and wars.
Like what five-time Golden Globe nominee Tony Randall said, “Awards are only a publicity gimmick”.
We can’t help but think that these awards are sometimes rip-offs or are acquired in a very disgusting manner just to prove that the awardees are indeed outstanding albeit others don’t think so. Who can forget the “Take it take it” incident of Ms. Mauritius Vivica Babajee in the Metro Manila Film Fest of 1994 where she played as an accomplice in naming Ruffa Gutierrez as the winner for the Best Actor and Actress category, perpetuated of course by the amusing Lolit Solis.
You thought that it was an isolated incident and doesn’t happen in most awards? We’ll you’re totally misinformed. As what Barbara Streisand once said “most awards, you know, they don’t give you unless you go and get them - did you know that? Terribly discouraging”. This is coming from a multi-awarded Singer-songwriter-actress who won multiple Oscars, Emmys, Grammys and Golden Globe Awards.
Just last year when the Philippine Blog Awards was held, most of the winners associated with the organizers won, yet for all we know, that your contents might be more worth reading than their shallow posts (don’t dare me, I’ve read some of them, and I’m not impressed). I’m not accusing of irregularities of sort because I’m not an FBI for crying out loud, its just that, as what Fitz has mentioned in Reyna Elena’s blog, that “any award-giving body will always be subject to criticism because it is made up of people. These people can have faults, principles, beliefs and reputations that others may find unworthy of their support.”
Exactly my point! If an award is therefore plagued with so many mistakes and faults caused by human nature, then better not give awards at all less it will just harbor tons of criticisms and will just turn into a carnival of empty fame and glory.
Malen of MyNosebleed.com wrote a satire of the recent blog awards saying, “I heard kase na sa Phil Blog Awards chuva ek ek daw, if you’re a nominee, you’ll have to send them your 5 best blog posts….for what purpose? Will they base their judgement on that? I am not sure pero para saan nga ba ang 5 entries na yun? I don’t get it. Kase kung yun nga, eh i-no-nominate ko ang sarili ko. Heck, I have 6 best blog entries HAHAHAH!!!! (I heard that in the PBA chuva eke k, that if you’re a nominee, you’ll have to send them your 5 best blog posts….for what purpose? Will they base their judgment on that? I am not sure but for what purpose is those 5 entries? I don’t get it. Because if that’s the case I will nominate myself, Heck, I have 6 best blog entries HAHAHAH!!!!).
Actually, Malen’s “award winning post” stemmed as a follow up of Reyna Elena’s blog post which questions the credibility of the blog awards after her blog was nominated and was asked to submit 5 entries of her best post, “I don’t know about you, but The 2008 Philippine Blog Awards Organizing Committee has just made me a judge!”. It’s nice that the Philippines has its own blog awards, but it turns out that the only people recognized are the ones who are popular, well known and established. Yet there are tons of blogs out there who truly deserves to be nominated.
In my point of view, there are so many blogs out there that are worth recognizing which apparently has few readers and few exposures, but that is the reason why it is called the PHILIPPINE blog awards, in order to recognize existing blogs in the Philippines. Heck they can just change the name to “Philippine Traffic/Popularity Blog Awards” if everything is based on fame.
Not all blogs that speaks English fluently and uses high-falooting words are sensible and deep. One may have great vocabulary, which can easily be coughed from the MSN Encarta in a click of a finger, or a flawless grammar that is ironed in MS Word. But one can never ever question a blog that consists wisdom and depth, even if it uses languages that are colloquial in nature or speaks our native tongue Tagalog. The point is, they blog, express themselves and make a difference in the blogosphere by their words that can often change lives and not just ride on the SEO driven topics in search engines.
As what George W. Bush said in a certain event, “To those of you who received honours, awards and distinctions, I say well done. And to the C students, I say you, too, can be president of the United States”.
Glory is not equated to trophy! There are more priorities in blogs than those stupid awards, which some “newbies” in the blogosphere fail to realize. It is saddening that such award, to the point of compromising their contents, blind many of the new bloggers. Passion should be preferred rather than awards. One may have their 5 minute fame on the stage, but you will immediately sink in oblivion just because not one of your post have been engraved in the minds of the readers.
Yet for those who write because they continue to touch lives, make a difference by their analytical and stimulating entries will be forever recognized by readers as one of the best blogs they have ever read, because every word that they write sinks into the heart— as what I have been rooting for ReynaElena.com, which doesn’t need any award because the blog itself is already a such to numerous people who read it as far away as Jamaica, The South Americas and Africa.
Yet who am I to question the nature of the blog awards? I’m not even interested in it. But I have the right to solely say my piece in virtue of democracy and freedom of speech which are often stifled by the few, because if everything you read is just made up of oranges, heck we will all suffer from Vitamin C excess which causes nausea and diarrhea. I’m here to offer apple and grapes, to at least have a different taste of what fruits are all about, hence a different perspective of the blog awards..
Of course, if anyone is antagonistic about certain awards, people will start to label them as sourgrapes. But the truth is I’m not.
In 2004, a nursing student who has been a consistent Deans’ lister and an academic full scholar, because he has no grades lower than 1.5, has been eliminated from the race of being the first Magna Cum Laude of the College of Nursing of that school. Just because he was stricken out of the list and vetoed by two lazy Clinical Instructors who happen to be angry with him, for the reason that he always question them on their manner of teaching and questionable professional conduct as college professors. The student was stunned of the decision. But majority of his clinical instructors told him after the Graduation that the real battle was not in the bowels of transcripts but on the ratings of the board exam. So the student gave his all in reviewing for the boards. After three months, the results were released and he garnered a board rating above 80%, a board rating that to this day, has never been surpassed in the history on that college. The College offered him a job and a testimonial dinner but he refused. What for?
You see, not all people are hungry for awards and recognitions. There are some people who have different priorities in mind aside from those shining brass of false glory. As the award-winning singer Toni Braxton puts it, “Grammys, American Music Awards, successful albums, I’d pick my kids any day over any of it.”
In the 1972 Academy Awards, the Oscars for Best Actor was given to Marlon Brando for his performance in “The Godfather”. He did not attend the awards night but instead sent Sacheen Littlefeather, an actor pretending to be Apache. She said in the speech in behalf of Marlon Brando that the reason why he wouldn’t accept his Oscar, is due to the poor treatment of American Indians by the film industry.
The whole point of this entire post is that, not all people are hungry for awards. Not all bloggers are envious and jealous of those shining glass statuesque. And not all blogs are written, driven and motivated by such awards. Because there are more sensible things to blog about than waste precious time in recognizing and promoting one self as the best of all the rest. When in fact, anyone could just be a victim of false glory and empty recognition that not even ten people would remember him or her for their feat.
I agree with what Fitz said “All these is (are) just a matter of choice. A conscious decision on who you want to be associated with or not”.
That is so true because ever since I got my self-hosted blog, I never wanted to be associated with such awards that is from the very start, questionable in essence and in purpose. I have been recommended by at least three bloggers in the past, which I will not name, to be entered in the nominee’s list, but I declined early on before they have the guts to nominate me. Not for any reason except that, they are asking for my real name and address needed for the nomination process… My identity and location is more precious than the awards itself, so I declined
There are two kinds of bloggers here in the blogosphere:
The ones who write for the purpose of gaining an award and the ones who write for passion.
I want to be the latter. Because seriously, mas may mapapala pa ako sa Ka Pepe kesa sa kanilang Trophy! And in case you were wondering, I was the Nursing Student above.

Hahaha! Kudos to that Nursing student! Well, kk nilang blue! That’s what happens when people realized their stupid mistakes. Babalikan ka and will offer you one banana achaka dalwang patola.
Grad nga ako nang Dominican university with 21 units of Theology, koyah! Hahaha! Pero “ok” naman yong grades ko, “hik!” Opppss, sori.
Anyway, don’t get me wrong. Kahit i-blag pa nila ang comment ko. I want to win ALL OF THEIR AWARDS! Hahahaha! I am pretty, I know it all, I am the bestest of them all. Me konting konting katiting na little problem lang. I’m not user-friendly like most of them. Hehehe! Andun yan sa rules nila ha? You must be user-friendly. Ganun. Mali ba intindi ko? Hehehe!
I agree with some of what my readers have been telling me. Truth is, typical Pinoy landscape pa rin naman sila. Walang pinag-bago. Parang political landscape ni Gloria. Pag ass licker ka nila, win ka. Look at all the political appointments. I don’t think they have the guts to recognize yong mga critics nila (*tinuro sarili), worse mga kaaway nila who are actually good bloggers. To them, the best bloggers are the ones who are “yes nanay” to them. Kelangan pa bang imemorize yan? Hahaha!
sabi ko nga, i blog according to my rules at mga kapritso ko. sila ang tumugma saken at indi ako. hahaha! mataray pakinggan but its the trulala.
they should give us an award for making them more popular hahaha

I mean you are stiull pinoy with all the qualities pero syempre daw kung ano mga nakaugalian sa systema dito dapat hindi na daw dun ganun haha.
I thinks that’s true. I still remember what Ross told me when i was still new to blogging here, she said: i should not mind what my readers want or my critics laments, my blog should be according to what I want o erlse i will end up as a burn out blogger, something to that effect

Medals, trophies or other form of recognition are all temporary but respect is lifetime. I understand your sentiments.
Just to share.
When I was in nursing, we have this subject called logic. Supposed to be the professor should be a Philosophy Graduate ofr a BS Psycho, but because the school lack qualified professor, ang pinagturo lang ay isang AB Psycho na Guidance Counselor namin.
every class it’s not my style to volunteer in class in answering the teachers question. Usually tahimik lang ako and i let my classmates answer the questions. I am an interrogator. Pero everytime no one can answer the questions, that prof always call me. And I answered all of her questions according what she wants to hear.
after the sem, nagulat ako because she gave me a 1.75 grade while the HRM guy who is running for cum laude cannot even answer questions and top the exams. So I went to her and demanded that she give me a higher grade plus I dared her to give me another final exam and I will perfect it again (I was on a full scholar mode noon kaya naghahabol ako sa grades). haha kapal ko ano? and because she saw that I am not that easy to give up on my rights, she gave me a 1.25.
Alam ko sasabihin ng iba garapal at mataas ang ego ko, pero the truth is, at that time I was already tired of being pushed over by teachers like that. All my life I have been taken for granted kaya nung time na yun talagang palaban na ako. Kalalabas ko pa lang non sa seminary, and it is in the seminary where I experience the joy of education. And walang issue noon samin sa grades kasi you are given what you have sowed. Kaya nung lumabas ako at nag nursing, sabi ko, enough is enough with the academic bullying and favoritism. I have to fight back.. ayun napala ko, di tuloy ako inawardan haha. Pero later I realized its all bull-sheet. Awards are vainglory. Its really on the job interview that one can really show what he is made of.

I think having an award is important because it simplifies your work. It’s not a actually a prize but it is to show recognition of what you have done and that all field will recognize. On the other hand, it’s just a matter of how whether we human beings can perceive things objectively, do things because we like doing it and not because we are after into some competition.

I agree. I think this was also my reaction last year when someone attacked “Carlo Ocab” when he won the influential blog last 2007… If my memory is correct sabi ko:
“we are just blogging for crying out loud, we are not running for president, so stop picking on the 12 year old kid”.
nun kasi the poor boy was blogged and pinned down by the same people who is running the PBA
but in a different light, yeah that is also true, sometimes award does matter because it justifies and confirms what the people have been voting and rooting for. Sana lang maplantsa lahat ng rules like what reynz said.

anyway, awards are easily forgotten. sige nga… don’t search on it in the internet… who’s the oscar’s best actress in the year 1995? di ba you don’t know? they are just another thing that can add up dust in our homes.

depende kasi sa purpose yan eh. if you write or do things because you wanna be recognized it’s a bit shallow. but if you write and do things because you LOVE IT and passion mo…. that’s something and rewards/awards are not necessary anymore… kasi ginagawa mo gusto mo. parang icing on the cake na lang yung awards. what matters is the motivation/drive/ and the purpose. hehe.

Im so sorry if you are scandalized in any way. I have no control on people’s acts. I have no intention of turning my blog into a war blog. But let me assure you that this will not happen again. Nahihiya po ako sa inyo and to the rest of my unassuming blog friends who just happens to be caught in the middle of this issue.
May delusions of Grandeur po yan. Let us just continue blogging na lang and ignore charlatans.
Thank you so much po for the compliment. Your esteem for me is already an award itself.

From a debater from Team Philippines during the 2008 World Universities Debate Championship — the examples you presented are non sequiturs.
re: last thoughts
does it have to be that simplistic? I don’t think they’re mutually exclusive.
I don’t think participating in an award-giving process diminishes any of your credibility as a blogger. To even suggest it is downright insulting. I have worked my way up and paid my dues and now, cable networks routinely ask me to guest on shows that require a blogger’s perspective on issues and national concerns. For somebody who claims to be holy, your post speaks of haughtiness.
I (along with the other winners) personify the new blogger. The new blogger is no longer a tech-bound geek confined to talking about things that only people in the industry would understand. Outside of blogging, I’m a medical student in the top medical school in the country. I’m one of the best collegiate debaters in the Philippines. On top of this, I have obligations to my basketball team and my heavy metal rock band. You have the nerve to trivialize us?
Get this, punk. YOU HAVE NOTHING ON ME.

What I blog about is a follow up on Reynz’ article. As you can see we both have disagreements here pero di kami bastos sa isat isa. I could have been convinced of your crap if you are even that close to courtesy.
another one is, bakit ka sa akin magagalit? eh follow up lang to. The original post is Reyna Elena dot com.
How guilty are you? Thats why its only called “most” and not all. and hey mind your manners because this is still my blog. I dont go to your blog and trash dirt on it.
And who says that Im holy? have you seen any explicit contents here that pertains to myself of my holiness? You are just pissed off that someone has the nerve to write something that others are afraid of. Many times I have read this entry and I am careful to even name those awardees… but im sorry, you have the guts to even admit in public that you are the one being pertained above even though you are not. Its not my fault that you are paranoid.
Dude, likewise here. I don’t give a shit on who you are. And who cares what you think about being a debater? being a medical student? or being an awardee? who really cares? will that feed me? will that make me a lesser person? will that diminish my achievements? This entry is not a debate! nor a venue for competition! NOR THE PLACE TO BRAG YOUR STUPID ACHIEVEMENTS.
If you will always brag about being a debater, then why not just wear all of them on yor neck wherever you go?
wag mo ako takutin, dahil wala akong takot. So what if you are a medical student? DUH!
Be careful on your words pare, wag kang bastos. wala ako binabastos na kapwa ko blogger dito sa blog ko. as much as possible kahit di ako agree sa sinasabi nila eh very diplomatic ako.

Wow!!! Mr. Worlds 2008 Chorvalais ever! You surprised me! You actually made me laugh! Dang! You should have been on the Comedy Category! This is like Category 2 Benj Hurricane ever! I guess this is how you debate —– “I am Team Chorvalais Ever, Winner of Miss World Chorva so everyone should be afraid, be very afraid because I am also the World University eklavu ever and everyone better not say nutin’ anymore because I am the Champion, I’m a medical student in the top medical chorvalais, so get out in here or I’ll castrate you and I’m one of the best dressed collegiate debaters in the Philippines ever ever and ON TOP OF THIS? I am just one bloody airhead!!!”
Whatever happened to your academics Benj? You’ve just lost it! Should we retreat in total darkness because the Lord of the Hurricanes is coming and all of his medal dangling? If indeed you were the best of the best, where was the best, Benj? I didn’t see it from what you wrote here.
I’m sure you must have done pretty good in that debate, wherever the hell that might be. If that gives you an authority to be superman, maybe there’s too much water boiling in your head. We don’t know what happened in that debate. So fuck it. But, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that you were the best in swimsuit competition. After all, you plurked that “at the end of the day we all KNOW THAT WE ARE MUCH BETTER LOOKING THAN THEM! and in the end, that is all that matters.”, really??? I’ll be blunt, I’d like to compete with your doctor friend in swimsuit competition. Hahaha!
It’s an open secret that this blog awards continues to suffer a very negative perception of “May the Best Friends Win”, even from last year. Given that you’re a very talented guy (as you claim), it was in your best interest and your group, to help the committee correct their ridiculous judging and selection process. You would have looked much bigger and brighter, debate awards not needed. Instead, you chose not to because you want the award. Selfish? All you have to do now, is protect that darn trophy no matter how crooked the selection was. Either for you or for anyone else. That was the reason why you were silent and is only reactionary now because you won. If you truly care about pinoy bloggers AS A WHOLE, not as a WHORE, and even your so called “ BETTER LOOKING GROUP” you would have stepped up. Why did you not step up as a leader? Because you don’t know what’s right from wrong? Or you’re comfortable enough to win because they are your friends?
If I were you Benj, I would have set aside my wanting to win that award and helped the committee made it right instead of making something right which was already wrong from the very beginning. That’s how to be classy instead of “punk, YOU HAVE NOTHING ON ME”..No matter how many awards you have gotten from Timbukto debates, it will not erase the fact that this blog awards is saddled with dead serious credibility problems and you and your cliquesh group should have been wise enough to assure the pinoy blogging world about equal access and fairness. But no, your friends stuck to “It’s either our way or the highway” and shown your exclusionary motives to all these pinoy bloggers.
So to you Benj (and quite possibly to your BETTER LOOKING FRIENDS), if there is anybody in there who is trying to dilute whatever celebrity fantasy status that you and think you might have, it’s just you and the blog awards to blame, sweetheart.

Honestly reynz, I do not know why this guy is so pissed since I never mentioned any names nor did I generalized all of the winners. Its very clear above when I said “most”. I bet this guy just scanned the article and searched for any loopholes on it without even looking at the big picture, the true context of my post.
Need I say the true gist of this post? Ngayon pa pare eh sinabi na nya na sya ay World sumthing… he should have already understood the context
Actually I was not shocked with his attitude. Ganyan talaga naman sya ever since.
Just to give you a history.
Last year I was just a newbie here in the blogosphere. Though I’ve been blogging since 2005, but the thought of having your own self hosted blog is something new for me. Honestly I don’t know him from adam because I don’t really give a damn if someone is popular of not. Whats important is you came to my blog with respect, then I will also treat you with respect.
When I was searching for a blogger’s prayer, I landed on Fr. Cuying’s blog. I was scandalized that a certain priest was being attacked by this same guy just because the priest fulfilled his duty in saying the blogger’s prayer last 2007 PBA. I do not know about the issue then, but it was clear to me that this guy was pissed at the prayer, saying he was offended. On Fr. Cuying’s defense, he was just asked by the committee to lead the prayer.
http://www.stephencuyos.com/archives/280
but the Priest said his piece because we who were trained in the seminary are also encouraged to rebut such accusations that are not true–It is covered on the Just War Doctrine of the Catholic church. Na if you are attacked, then you have all the right to defend your stance. Here is the defense of Fr. Cuying
http://www.stephencuyos.com/archives/282
And then one time I posted a topic here on my blog regarding the chocolate Jesus made by Cosimo Cavallero. He went to my blog and started asking questions. I really don’t know how he got my link since I dont visit his blog, but anyways, I accommodated him despite and inspite of what he did to Fr. Cuying because you see I don’t hold against people what they’ve done to others in the past. I have to see it for my self before I make a judgment. Our exchange of Ideas was very educational. In fact he even complimented me on that post which is very contradictory to what he is saying now, considering my style of writing for that post and in this post is the same. He could have told me from the very start that I’m HAUGHTY. Bakit ngayon lang? You can really see the insincerity of the guy. Here is the said post
http://bluepanjeet.net/375/morally-grotesque/
Having said, he gained my respect at that time, not because of his sugarcoated words, but because he proved to me that he can be a gentleman which is totally different from what I saw and read in Fr. Cuyos blog and in this entry.
I linked him and always thank him for his time in reading my blog (???) or entires that triggers him to provoke debate
During the time that he also guested on a cable show, as what he claimed above, I even congratulated him. In other words my respect is true and authentic. Never did I made a post here about his belief because one of my principles in life is to tolerate every kind of belief no matter how absurd it maybe because for me, respect cannot be gained, it is given freely.
When he barged in here and saying all those crap above. I was not shocked, because I already know in my heart the capacity of this guy to become arrogant. He has this insatiable desire to always provoke debates online even if the people around him are not into it and just expressing their freedom of speech.
I was shocked on the fact that of all the people who claimed that they are debaters, eh sya lang ang bukod tanging hindi nakakuha ng punto ko dito.
He maybe what he is claiming to be, but being a debater myself, though im not a world something, he forgot the most important strategy of the whole concept of debate which is what our coach at that time taught us: WAG NYO PAPATULAN ANG ISANG ARGUMENTO NA HINDI NYO BINABASA MABUTI ANG KONTEKSTO.
Context is everything in a debate. And what he claimed as non-sequiturs, I beg to disagree because what he has in his filthy mouth, he lacks in wisdom.
A good debater always considers the other side of the coin. The whole point of a debate is not to push your ideas to the opponent, because if that is the case, the debate would never end. On top of that, a debater is like a martial artist, don’t tell your enemy that you are a such for he can anticipate and predict your weaknesses. One primary ethics of being a good debater is, never flaunt it, play the psywar, that you are an underdog, so that during the debacle, when you attack, your opponent wouldn’t know what hit them, for they underestimated you.
Debates are not held just to remove the chaff from the grains, but to actually hail the one who makes sense in the general topic being argued.
and based on his comments above, I say its not a comment of a debater but a whiner.
Sayang, what he showed us here is his immaturity. He maybe be intelligent, but surely he lacks wisdom. And intelligence without wisdom is nothing but a memorized and stored data on your brain. The english language is just the medium, its the common sense, the idea and the contextual analysis which makes a debater great and not just highfalootin’ words
Truly I have nothing on him, because even humilty has nothing on him.
I can easily post an entry for this punk rock dude, but my mentors told me not to waste time on such unworthy opponent. He is 23, I’m on my 30’s, kung papatulan ko yan, ako lang magiging katawa tawa kasi isip bata. Wala pang alam sa buhay kungdi awards.

Mommy kengs, that is a nice analogy.
Till now nakatatak sa utak ko ang salitang “Study for life and not for grades”.
Share ko lang mommy kengs, Mahalia of chocolateword.net and I (we are batchhmates) have this common friend in HS who happens to be our Class Valedictorian. She became a full scholar in Ateneo. She had her masters in Japan, and now she is having her PhD in Prague or somewhere in Europe. Her name is Rouselle. I used to tease her Kampanerang Kuba because truth is, nasisira na talaga dati posture nya ka-aaral. Yet eventhough she is so intelligent, she never once mentioned to us that she is worthy of the honors and achievemnts she received.
Yung isa pa namin kaibigan na salutatorian sa batch namin, also happened to be her best friend na n agaral naman sa UP diliman. Pero never nagway yung dalawa o nagpataasan ng award. Till now they are still our friends and never nila pinagmayabang sa amin ang achivements nila. Mababalitaan na lang namin through word of mouth na nandun na pala sila sa abroad, with full scholarship and all.
I also have a barkada in HS who was also a full scholar in Ateneo. He is Gerlon, the brother of one of our members in KABATAQ. Pero never syang nagyabang na matalino sya kahit alam nung buong batch na nasosolve nya ang mathematical equations using his own series of solutions.
This I think is the best example that I can think of which is related to your experience.
