Before Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey became the Richest man and woman on earth, there came a list in Fortune 500 of the 90?s top billionaires who were considered as Nouveau Riche or in English, the ?new rich?. Nouveau Rich means people who started as a part of lower socioeconomic rank and after hard work, determination and diligence became the richest men and women of the World. Let?s start with Sultan Haji Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam who is the only remaining absolute Monarch and had an air-conditioned stable for his ponies. His wealth came from the family who controls the oil-rich country of Brunei.
Next comes Queen Elizabeth who became England?s Nouveau Rich not only because of her crown but also because of her 270,000 acres of agricultural land; premier London real estate; vast stock portfolio; art; jewelry; stamps; porcelain; furniture; and racehorse. The Queen and her family was publicly criticized saying that the Royal Family should be taxed because the country cannot afford their luxury since they spent $105,169 a year on laundry and $62,656 on flowers alone.
King Fahad of Saudia Arabia is next in line who obviously became a Nouveau Riche after oil and gas was discovered on their land. He soon became famous when he was obliged to give expensive gifts to the heads of state during the Gulf War. His riches include a Castle in Spain, patterned after the white house, only bigger.
Many are still lined up on the list but interesting enough, these Monarchs are not just absolute royalties but also absolute business men in their own right. Their determination to gulped so much many are compensated by their philanthropic acts?like Oprah Winfrey for example. How about you? Do you want to be the next Nouveau Riche Man?
