Mighty Wings

6th

I just found one of my poems written years ago when I was still in the seminary. I wrote this when I was so depressed and troubled inside the formation. It is actually a metaphor of my self as an eagle. I have this thing for flying and wings. It somehow gives me the boost to move on higher and higher. I read it once again and I was very astonished by the depth of the message. I did not realize until now that the poem has so many levels. I can’t even imagine that I have written such a poem, considering that I’m a poetic wreck. Well my fascination with eagles gave me the inspiration to write this poem. My Mentor in Spanish in the seminary, Fr. Pete Feniz OFMcap., asked us seminarians to translate any poem as our midterm exam. I chose and translated this poem and actually gave it as a requirement and a gift to my mentor (it was his birthday at that time). He loved it so much that he asked for a copy of it.

Strangely enough, I stumbled upon it accidentally today. Maybe to remind me of my old beliefs that I need to recall, especially right now that I am experiencing another paradigm shift in my life. This poem gave me strength during times of tests… hope it will do to you too…

WINGS

I spread my wings on winds above
to fly to the horizon of unknown
to set afloat in the vast wide space
to reach the goal I groan

with wings of eagle I take flight
above the hardships of terrestrial life
yet in store for me; I was surprised
to find it hard to soar the heights

the winds blew strong in different direction
thrown and tossed; to and fro
yet with decision and determination
I mastered the ways the winds blow

to glide every current tossing
to soar in every force so strong
to rise in every inch of falling
to swoop when everything goes wrong

I take flight to new heights
though human and not an angel
yet powerful as the king of the air
and with wings strong as an eagle

my wings carry me wherever I go
dare to go against the greater things
and through life’s most difficult challenges
I face them all with my mighty wings

This is the Spanish translation, which I translated as a part of my requirement in Spanish 102. I gave this to my mentor as a gift for his birthday. I do not know if I made the correct translation because Fr. Pete, never returned the corrections to me. The english was cool but i’m not sure about the spanish translation. If some of you who are very fluent in Spanish, please feel free to correct the declensions and grammatical errors. I can’t seem to recall some of the rules in Spanish because of memory lapse and antiquity of time. I will appreciate it very much.

ALAS

Huyo a alturas nuevas

Keep well and God Bless!
