WYD08 Day 5 photo highlights III (July 19,2008) - WYD Youth Vigil with the Pope

Pope Benedict XVI has spoken at a Sydney racecourse to address a candlelit vigil attended by tens of thousands for the Catholic church’s World Youth Day. The Pope arrived at 7.15pm (AEST) to a rapturous welcome, waving to the crowd to religious music. Organisers said more than 200,000 young Catholics were gathered at the Royal Randwick Racecourse in eastern Sydney where the Pontiff addressed the prayer session as the world’s largest Christian festival approaches its conclusion. A giant cross overshadowed the stage where Pope Benedict addressed the crowd and dancers dressed in white performed ahead of his arrival, to the sound of religious songs. The Pope called for unity in faith in a divided world, saying growing secularism was fragmenting society. Benedict said the world was a fragile place, citing the troubled Sudanese region of Darfur as evidence. He called for unity, calling it the “essence of the church” and telling the faithful to “resist any temptation to walk away” from it.

He warned against the temptation to “go it alone”. “You are already well aware that our Christian witness is offered to a world which in many ways is fragile,” the Pope said. “The unity of God’s creation is weakened by wounds which run particularly deep when social relations break apart, or when the human spirit is all but crushed through the exploitation and abuse of persons. “Indeed, society today is being fragmented by a way of thinking that is inherently short-sighted, because it disregards the full horizon of truth - the truth about God and about us. “From the forlorn child in a Darfur camp, or a troubled teenager, or an anxious parent in any suburb, or perhaps even now, from the depth of your own heart, there emerges the same human cry for recognition, for belonging, for unity.”

Australia’s biggest city has been transformed by the estimated 215,000 worshippers from around the country and the world who are in Sydney for a six-day Catholic youth celebration led by the 81-year-old Pontiff.
