Have you seen the scene in Indiana Jones and the last crusade wherein Indy and the Austrian lady doctor went into the tomb of the knight and thousands of rats plagued them on the sewer? Well Sydney literally depicted that scene in contrast. Tens of thousands of joyful young people filled the streets of sydney as they prepare to welcome the star of the World Youth Day, Pope Benedict XVI. Taffic and public transport services were flowing well after hundreds of thousands of people descended on Sydney’s CBD on thursday July 17 to officially welcome Pope Benedict XVI to Australia. Extra rail and bus services were scheduled to move the massive crowds and the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) praised Sydneysiders who heeded their requests to leave cars at home. World Youth Day (WYD) Coordination Authority transport spokesman Adam Berry said train services would continue to run into the night for those who wished to continue celebrating.

“If you’re commuting by train, there’s extensive services there and they will continue to run at a high frequency right into the evening. “Anyone who does want to stay in town to get involved in the festivities can do so knowing that there will be plenty of services to get back home into the night,” he said.

On the roads, congestion was experienced on Elizabeth, Park and Druitt streets, and the Cahill Expressway was busy heading north, while the Sydney Harbour Bridge was flowing “fairly well”, Mr Berry said. “Basically, we are seeing the peak that we would expect given on the one hand we’ve got a reduction in traffic but on the other hand we do have some pretty significant road closures, so the roads are operating well at the moment,” he said. With only one more day of peak-hour traffic to negotiate, Mr Berry has called for commuters to continue to keep their cars at home. “People really have been very cooperative and we thank them for that. It’s really been essential to the operation running smoothly,” he said.

“We just need one more day. We need to see reduced traffic levels tomorrow because there is another major event in the CBD tomorrow that again requires extensive road closures, but (we’re) certainly very happy with what we’ve seen and ask people to be patient for one more day.”
