(12:30 AM EST / 9:30 PM PCT / 2:30 PM AEST)

SYDNEY today will become a giant outdoor theatre space for World Youth Day (WYD) as actors recreate the biblical account of Jesus Christ’s final days. The Stations of the Cross event - described as a devotional and “prayerful re-enactment” for Catholics - has 13 acts in total and will be played out at sites across the inner city. Tens of thousands of pilgrims will amass at seven sites, from the Domain to the Opera House and Darling Harbour, to watch a series of Stations either live or on large TV screens. “Sydney will host the spectacular launch of Stations of the Cross where the final hours of Jesus’ life are played out through CBD streets, beginning at St Mary’s Cathedral and concluding at the northern end of Barangaroo,” a WYD statement says.

Pope Benedict XVI will attend the first station - The Last Supper - at an invitation-only event at St Mary’s Cathedral, from 3pm (AEST). The event will end at Barangaroo at 6pm. Before the Stations of the Cross event gets underway, the 81-year-old pontiff will meet with other Christian leaders at St Mary’s Cathedral from 10.30am (AEST), then leaders from other faiths. The Pope will then lunch with 12 WYD pilgrims hand-picked to represent the different nations attending the six-day WYD event. Sydney commuters are again urged to avoid bringing vehicles into the city, where road closures remain in place.
