WYD08 Day 3 photo highlights II (July 17,2008) - Pope Benedict XVI prayed at the tomb of Australia’s soon-to-be First Saint

The Pope has visited a Sydney chapel dedicated to the nun who could become Australia’s first saint. Pope Benedict XVI visited the shrine of the Blessed Mary MacKillop in north Sydney. Mary MacKillop, born in Victoria in 1842, founded the Sisters of St Joseph in 1866 and died in north Sydney in 1909. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in January 1995, but remains one documented miracle away from becoming Australia’s first saint. The order of nuns founded by Mary MacKillop has been hoping the Pontiff may make an announcement about the campaign to promote her to full sainthood. The Pope offered up prayers while kneeling at the tomb of Mary MacKillop and at the altar of her chapel. He received a bronze bust of Mary MacKillop from Sister Anne Derwin, the leader of the Sisters of St Joseph, after greeting more than a dozen nuns of the order as he entered the chapel.
The Pope in turn presented the sisters with a statue of St Joseph. He blessed the congregation, which included more than 90 sisters of the order, and a contingent from the Vatican. Sister Derwin said afterwards that the Pope had told her Mary MacKillop would be canonised if the Vatican confirmed the second miracle. She said that after presenting the bronze bust, the Pontiff was “excited” about the gift. “He said, ‘She is smiling and now I will have her with me. One day she will be canonised, depending on that miracle’.”
