Pope Benedict XVI arrived at Government House to be officially welcomed to Australia. The Pope left St Mary’s Cathedral house in his 17-car motorcade shortly before 9am and made the short journey along Macquarie Street to the official residence of the NSW Governor, where he was met by Australia’s Governor-General Michael Jeffery. Major-General Jeffery shook his hand before introducing him to the rest of the welcoming party, including Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and his wife Therese. The ceremony began on time at 9am (AEST). The 81-year-old was also greeted by NSW Governor Marie Bashir and Premier Morris Iemma before inspecting a military honour guard. The Pontiff waved to those on the sidelines of the official ceremony before returning to the dais, where Mr Rudd spoke. “On behalf of the Australian public and the Australian people it is my great honour to welcome His Holiness Pope Benedict the XVI to Sydney, Australia for this World Youth Day,” Mr Rudd said.

“Your Holiness, you are a very welcome guest in our country. Your Holiness, in this country you are truly among friends and we are honoured as Australians to have you with us today. Mr Rudd said it was an honour for all Australians to have the Pope visiting their country. “Australia’s Catholic community reflects the great diversity of the church worldwide,” he said. “Comprised of descendants of early Irish and English settlers, post-war migrants from Italy, from Malta and other parts of Europe. “And those who arrived more recently from diverse parts of the world including Asia, Latin America and the Pacific Islands.”
