POPE BENEDICT XVI ARRIVAL AND WELCOME (3 HOURS)
XXIII WORLD YOUTH DAY 2008
Sydney’s Darlington Harbor
July 17, 2008 12:30PM Manila Time
(12:30 AM EST / 9:30 PM PCT / 2:30 PM AEST)
ROAD road closures for the Pope’s tour of Sydney today will put the city into traffic lockdown. At least half a million people are expected to line the harbour foreshore and city streets to get a glimpse of Pope Benedict XVI. NSW Transport Minister John Watkins has repeatedly urged commuters to leave their cars at home to ease traffic during World Youth Day (WYD). Streets across the CBD were closed from midnight (AEST) last night to make way for the Pontiff’s motorcade, which will leave St Mary’s Cathedral just before 9am (AEST) to take him to Government House and then to Mary MacKillop Memorial Chapel in North Sydney. About 55 road closures and a similar number of event clearways are already in effect across the city.
Today is the Pope’s first day of official engagements during the six-day Catholic youth festival, and his itinerary criss-crosses Sydney Harbour, the city’s north shore and city centre. He will make his way to Government House in the Royal Botanic Gardens for a welcome ceremony at 9am (AEST), followed by a prayer visit at 9.45am (AEST) at the chapel at Mary MacKillop Place in North Sydney. Governor-General Michael Jeffery and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will meet the Pontiff privately at Admiralty House in Kirribilli just after 10am (AEST) for an hour before he returns to St Mary’s Cathedral.
At 2.20pm (AEST), the Pope’s motorcade will arrive at Rose Bay pier in Sydney’s east, where he will receive an Aboriginal welcome before boarding the vessel Sydney 2000. His flotilla will travel along the harbour foreshore and arrive at Barangaroo on Darling Harbour about 3.30pm (AEST), where he will address WYD pilgrims. At 4.45pm (AEST) he will take the popemobile through central Sydney to greet hundreds of thousands of people, with crowd estimates nearing the 500,000 mark. The motorcade procession ends at 5.30pm (AEST) and will mark the end of the Pope’s public activities for the day.

how come i like JP than Benny? ewan ko kung bakit… is it the looks or is it the fact that he’s german? sabi nga nung dean na nakausap ko when i got stranded at the airport with my cousin who is a priest… THAT GERMAN POPE…they both laughed and surprisingly, i laughed too. but i do want to give him a chance. i have to set aside my biases.

bluepanjeet reply on August 2nd, 2008:
Haha baka sa looks. Its not his being a German since Papacy doesn’t have any racial preference. Even Asians and Africans can be the Pope. Remember that most of the Patristic Fathers were all from Africa including St. Augustine of Hippo.
Pope Benny is misunderstood by many because his predecessor is a tough act to beat. Another is that Pope Benny is Pope Benny. He is different from JPII because the latter is very charismatic while the former is timid and shy. Nevertheless, no matter what the personlity is, we can still see the Holy Spirit working on him.
Ako din nung una medyo di ako sanay. I miss JPII so much especially every sunday and wednesday mass na ginagawa nya. That is why he is called the Great kasi sya lahat talaga halos ang gumagawa. Unlike Pope Benny that he just delegate the Canonization of Beatification of a saint to a certain Cardinal. Napakalaki ng Difference nila sa isat isa na sometimes people can’t help but compare him to his predecessor. Parang si Cardinal Rosales ngayon. Ikinukumpara sya kay Cardinal Sin. We are so lucky kasi naabutan pa natin ang isa sa mga pinakamagaling na Papa ng Simbahang katoliko. and Its only fiiting that the Lord called JPII during his time in the Papacy because the era of the 80’s and 90’s is so critical that JPII helped so much in shaping the history of the World.
Mas marami sya nagawa na history sa mundo compared sa lahat ng leaders ng bansa. Try to read his biography and mamamangha ka sa sobrang galing ni JPII na he even influenced the downfall of communism in Russia.
Well he accomplished his mission. So God gave us Pope Benedict for a different purpose. Kumbaga, ibang okasyon ibang damit naman.
Viva Il Papa
