Holy Chizmax: The Rumor of the next 2011 World Youth Day
By bluepanjeet on Jul 17, 2008 in Featured, World Youth Day

And you thought rumors are just confined in the political and entertainment domain of the spoken word? Well here is the hottest rumor now circulating within the WYD community and even among the clergy and religious, you’ll be surprised how the alter egos of Christry Fermin and Boy Abunda influenced the spread of this rumors. Well the rumors are far from being damaging or trivial, but they are so loud that it almost overshadowed the latest gossip about Brangelina’s $20 Million dollar twins. Apparently as early as Day 1 of World youth day, rumors are already circulating in the WYD community about the possible location of the next world youth day in 2011. The first time I heard it I actually summoned the spirits dwelling inside the billboards of the Rotary club and asked myself: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendship? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?. Before I go on I just want to clarify that I’m not in any way connected with the Rotary club nor have I been possessed by the billboard-dwelling spirits of the “Four way test”. I just find it cute to include this in my post. Anyway, enough of the nonsense, here is the latest rumor…
(Chizmax - A Filipino colloquial word used mostly in urbanized cities which means gossips or rumor)
I first heard this rumor from Pope2008.org about the possibility that the next WYD will be in Madrid, He says and I quote:
“The WYD rumor mill and Rocco Palmo at Whispers in the Loggia are uttering that the next WYD not only may be in Madrid, but that they may postpone it one additional year to 2010. Of course, the actual announcement won’t be made until the conclusion of this WYD.”
So I investigated further like a hawk looking for its prey and landed on the news page of Zenit.org:
Young people from Spain will have a less difficult time attending the next World Youth Day, according to a Vatican spokesman. Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi said in brief comments to the Spanish press that the youth of their country will have it “much easier” to participate in the next international youth day. The Spanish news agency Veritas reported that even though it’s not official, it’s expected that Benedict XVI will announce at the end of World Youth Day in Sydney that the next encounter will take place in Madrid. The agency said the statement was taken by journalists as a subtle affirmation from Father Lombardi of this rumor.
Having read from this reliable news source (and I think Zenit.org would not fuel any rumor among the faithful), I was convinced that there is a 75% possibility that the next WYD would indeed be in Madrid Spain. Catholic World News even gave a backgrounder why such rumor would be true, with its headline “Spanish cardinal lobbying to host World Youth Day”:
Cardinal Antonio Maria Ruoco Varela of Madrid, Spain, has asked Pope Benedict XVI to designate his Archdiocese as the host for the next worldwide celebration of World Youth Day, Vatican Radio reports
Catholic News however elaborated the earlier news of CWN by detailing in its website the story of the rumor:
Last month, he personally communicated his proposal to Bishop José Ángel Sáiz Meneses of Terrassa, who oversees the Spanish episcopate’s office of youth ministry. On Monday, Bishop Sáiz Meneses told the press: “It looks like an excellent idea to me, and from now we will prepare for it with all of our efforts.” Pope John Paul II visited Madrid in May 2003, an event that attracted hundreds of thousands of young people. It was confirmed this week that Pope Benedict XVI will visit Spain next July in order to attend the World Meeting of Families.
While this rumor remains to be 75% true considering the widespread correspondence of various catholic news agency about this issue, the 25% remains a possibility for other countries to host the 2011 WYD. Honestly I thought this lobbying and vying for the host city only happens in the Olympics. And as far as I know, in the past WYD, it was John Paul the Great who decides where the next WYD would be (or am I just being naive). Anyhow, the 25% belongs to the four other cities lobbying for the Next WYD.
Larry Rivera of About.com-Australia disclosed that there were two more cities vying for the WYD of 2011 aside from Madrid:
Madrid, Spain, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizante, Brazil, are among the cities vying to hold World Youth Day in 2011.
The Quest Travel Group even confirmed this news of Rivera in their Website. And the NY Times co-owned Herald Tribune ran a story on this with a banner “Brazil’s Roman Catholic Church wants to host 2011 World Youth Day”:
The world’s largest Roman Catholic country wants to host the church’s 2011 World Youth Day, Brazilian church leaders said on Thursday. Rocha said Brazil put in its bid last May when Pope Benedict XVI visited the South American country. However, the press conference was the first time church leaders publicly announced the country’s interest in hosting the event. He said the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte were likely venues.
As if the surprise was not enough, the same newspaper also mentioned a 4th city vying for world youth day in 2011 aside from Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte:
…and England also want to host the event…
Naming two European cities and two Latin American cities as the possible location of the 2011 WYD, a surprise underdog also surfaced in the rumor. Amy Welborn on her blog mentioned that Korea is also interested to host the next WYD. I quote from her entry:
Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, Archbishop of Seoul and Apostolic Administrator of Pyongyang, has said he will “do everything possible” to have Korea host the next World Youth Day (WYD), “one of the biggest events organized by the Catholic Church”. In an interview with Chosun Ilbo, the neo-cardinal said: “If South Korea manages to host World Youth Day, we would naturally invite the pope to come to visit our entire country.”
Asianews also featured a story about Nicholas cardinal Cheong Jin-Suk’s stance on persuading the Vatican to hold the next WYD in Asia, particularly in China. With a title “Card. Cheong: I will do my utmost to host next WYD in Korea”, Asianews further elaborated:
In an interview with Chosun Ilbo, the neo-cardinal said: “If South Korea manages to host World Youth Day, we would naturally invite the pope to come to visit our entire country. It is important to emphasize that having the WYD in Korea could give a considerable boost also to priestly vocations among youth, who may consider the north of the country as a field for their ministry,” continued the Cardinal”.
My Take: With all these politics going on within the Cardinals, I think the Young People won’t mind when or where the next WYD as long as it takes place and continues to revive faith among the young people of the world. But in my own personal opinion, I think Korea and Brazil should be given the chance to host because there is a great need for these countries to express to the world their need for spiritual revival: Brazil for belonging to the same Latin america that spread the questionable theology of liberation and Korea for its springtime in the Catholic faith as well as its desire to convert the communist north to Christianity. Spain and the entire European countries had already experienced WYD in their midst. Let the light of the Christ be brought to the Young People of Korea especially in Brazil whose youth are mostly in the poverty line and cannot attend such international event. Though the rumor had already been confirmed in various blogs, news and shows (even in EWTN’s Life on the Rock in their Papal Welcome live coverage), still, it remains to be heard directly from Benedict XVI himself, as he will announce it in the concluding Mass come this Sunday, January 20, 2008.
So as a teaser for the announcement of the next world youth day in 2011, below are some photos of the possible cities that will host the world’s largest youth Gathering. How about you, where do you want the next World Youth Day to take place in 2011?

Madrid!! Pero kahit alin sa mga places na ‘yan wish ko makapunta ka na para send mo kami postcard
Wala ako sa house namin kaya wala akong cable TV connection therefore no EWTN
kaya miss ko tuloy ang news about WYD ‘08.
Sa blog mo and EWTN site lang ako nagre-rely ng news about it. Feel ko pa rin yung WYD ‘95. Do we still hold the record of having the largest Catholic crowd - 5M - gathered in one place in one fine January morning?

yes we still hold the record breaking crowd. But if WYD will be held in Brazil, I’m gonna bet that they can break our record because it is the largest catholic country in the whole world. My personal preference is either in Brazil or Seoul, though it would be easy for me if it will be held in Madrid because i can speak and understand a little bit of Spanish, unlike in Seoul wherein Korean is the main tongue. asar pa mandin ka ako sa mga characters nila mahirap intindihin

It usually has been held every other time in Europe, every other outside, with the exception of Rome 2000. Since this time it is outside of Europe, I think it’ll be Madrid. England is too much of a hostile county.

I think its not a pattern like what you are saying since the 1989 and 1991 WYD were consecutively held in Europe and the 1993 and 1995 WYD was held in a non-european country. The Choice of country depends on the Chruch’s need and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It is said that the Holy Father (JPII) prays really hard in choosing the next country.
I agree. London has been tagged as one of the countries with so many racism incidents.

Sige hulaan tayo.
Pope Ben, since the start of his papacy, has been rallying for the re-evangelization of secular Europe; the bedrock of Christianity is losing its young people to secularism. So Madrid, from the Pope\’s vested interest, would be symbolic of this re-evan project. My bet.
I agree with you Bro that Brazil deserves it, considering its burgeoning population of young people. By then, that would be a showcase in numbers of praising and raising estrogen and testosterone. If granted, it would be on the merit of gratitude from the Vatican for their brimming, brawny faith.
Seoul - with Protestants still outnumbering Catholics, and its saber-rattling communist half-brother, still, there\’s not a very weighty reason to award it to this proud city.
London - way too messy with the current impasse in the Anglican Church and being one of the dartboards of terrorism. Logistic-wise, very expensive to pursue.
Yun lang Bro.pasensya na walang pics, hehe.Vote for Navotas - mura na, makakain pa sila ng masarap na fish fillet in all its international concoctions.

Oist tama ka sa bet mo hehe. Sa Madrid nga. And its true, Spain is currently plagued by Atheism and secularism like Australia. It would be a revitalization of the Catholic Church in Spain I’m sure. Pero sana next time sa mga poor countries naman para makita ng mundo na kahit sa abang kalagayan ng mga kapatid natin dun eh buhay ang simbahan. I wish Vatican would focus more in Africa, the Pacific Islands and South America
