150,000 strong attended the WYD Opening Mass in Sydney (WYD Day 1 Photo Highlights II)

Tens of thousands of joyful young Catholics were welcomed to Australia for World Youth Day as the first major event of the six-day festival got underway. An estimated 150,000 pilgrims from around Australia and the world chanted, sang and danced their way to Barangaroo, near Sydney’s Darling Harbour, for the 4.30pm (AEST) opening mass to be delivered by Cardinal George Pell, the leader of the Catholic church in Australia. The pre-mass celebrations included a flag ceremony followed by the arrival of the WYD cross and a large religious icon depicting Madonna and child, both of which have travelled around Australia for the past 12 months.

Casey Donovan, the singer who rose to fame on the reality talent show Australian Idol, then joined other indigenous performers, including dancers and didgeridoo players from around Australia and the Torres Strait Islands. Cheers rang out as Prime Minister Kevin Rudd took the stage with a wave to welcome the faithful in several languages, including German, Italian and French. To the Australian pilgrims, he said: “G’Day, and have a great time Down Under”. “Australia welcomes the youth of the world to Sydney. Australia welcomes the youth of the world to this celebration of faith and this celebration of life,” he said. “And as prime minister of Australia I welcome you from every land, every part, every continent on this our planet.” He said the young pilgrims were “so much the light of the world at a time when the world has so much darkness”. “Too often in the history of the world, when young people travel in great number to other parts of the world, they do so in the cause of war, but you here today are here as pilgrims of peace. “Some say there is no place for faith in the 21st century, I say they are wrong. Some say that faith is the enemy of reason, I say also they are wrong.”

YOUNG Catholics should struggle against their “fat relentless egos” and commit themselves to their faith, Sydney Archbishop Cardinal George Pell has told the World Youth Day (WYD) opening mass. He was addressing about 150,000 pilgrims during the homily for the mass - which marks the official opening of the six day Sydney event. Speaking to the colourful crowd of pilgrims, waving flags from countries from around the world, Dr Pell told them that following Christ required struggle, sacrifice and self-discipline. “Following Christ is not cost free, not always easy, because it requires struggling against what St Paul called ‘the flesh’ - old fat relentless egos, old fashioned selfishness,” he said in his homily. “It is always a battle, even for old people like me. Don’t spend your life sitting on the fence, keeping your options open, because only commitments bring fulfillment. “Happiness comes from meeting our obligations, doing our duty, especially in small matters and regularly so we can rise to meet the harder challenges.

“Many have found their life calling at World Youth Day.” Cardinal Pell welcomed pilgrims to Sydney saying “Many of you have travelled such a long way that you may believe that you have arrived… at the ends of the earth”. If so, that’s good, for Our Lord told his first apostles that they would be his witnesses in Jerusalem, and to the ends of the earth,” Cardinal Pell said. “That prophecy has been fulfilled in the witness of many missionaries to this vast southern continent, and it is fulfilled yet again in your presence here.” The opening mass, which 26 cardinals, 400 bishops and up to 4000 priests are attending, is the biggest mass ever celebrated in Australia and will be only overtaken by the Pope’s mass this Sunday at Randwick. It is also the largest mass Cardinal Pell has ever given. Cardinal Pell told the pilgrims World Youth Day was a time for celebration, but also urged them “to listen and pray”. “I expect that in the next five days of prayer and celebration that your spirits will rise, as mine always does in the excitement of this World Youth Day,” he said. “During this week we have every right to rejoice and celebrate the liberation of our repentance, rejuvenation of our faith. “And the young ones, I give a gentle reminder that in your enthusiasm and excitement, you do not forget to listen and pray.”

Earlier in his homily, Cardinal Pell also made specific mention of those Australians struggling with the drought with a passage in the Old Testament about the “valley of the dry bones”. “Our first reading today was from Ezekiel, with Isaiah and Jeremiah, one of the three greatest Jewish prophets,” he said. “Many parts of Australia are still in drought, so all Australians understand a valley of dry bones and fleshless skeletons.” Cardinal Pell also called out to those who may find themselves “lost” or in deep distress. “Earlier in this mass I welcomed you all to this World Youth Day week … but I do not begin with the 99 healthy sheep, those of you already open to the Spirit, perhaps already steady witnesses to faith and love,” he said. “I begin by welcoming and encouraging anyone, anywhere, who regards himself or herself as lost, in deep distress, with hope diminished or even exhausted. “Young or old, woman or man, Christ is still calling those who are suffering to come for healing, as he has for 2000 years.”

Actually spanish is easy as well as italian, portuguese and latin.

Post ko mamaya after the coverage.

Well JPII and Benedetto are both excellent Popes as all Popes are. They just differ in administration style which the whole catholic church respects. Though without minus to Benedict XVI’s capacity as a Pope, we have tremendous idea of JPII because he is our Pope for over 20 years.. longest ever in the 20th century. While Pope Benny is only 3 years old in the Chair of Peter. But right now he is capturing the hearts of the Young People because in Cologne hundreds of Youth cried in tears when benedict apporached them, same thing that transpires when JPII is around.

Lets all pray for the Pope.

    Dearest Fr,

I am so flattered that visited my blog and even took the time to comment. You are the third Priest/religious who have commented on my blog, and I’m so honored. Mostly, religious nuns and priests who frequents my blog doesn’t leave any comments. That’s why I was so surprised and somewhat flattered reading yours.

Father, unfortunately I didn’t make it to Sydney, the story is here:
    http://bluepanjeet.net/1288/i-never-told-anyone-but-the-truth-is-i-am-supposed-to-be-in-sydney-australia-this-week/

I decided to have a regularly updated coverage of the WYD as a social service to those who cannot attend the said event, yet found it difficult to search the net for realtime news about the events in WYD.

This is my way of celebrating WYD in spirit.

Normally father I run sponsored post here in my blog, but I am on “Ad holiday” in tribute and honor of the Celebration of the WTD in sydney. WYD is very special for me since I was an Alumni of WYD 1995 in manila which led me to my vocation as a Capuchin religious brother (I’m now an ex-seminarian–not anymore connected with them).

Having said all these father, I am greeting you a Happy World Youth Day together with the millions of young people in the world who are “virtually one” with the celebration, and with heartfelt joy, and spirit of peace that I have felt since day 1 of my blog coverage.

The Lord truly works wonders even in the internet.

Misty eyed from the overwhelming joy

    Dear Bluepanjeet,
Thank you for your kind message. I read the story of your attempt to go to WYD. It is all part of God’s plan. So many bloggers in Sydney are not able to get on-line and they are all caught up in the excitement of the various events. Perhaps if you were there you would have no time to blog yourself. Instead you are making people like me fell as if I am one with all the young pilgrims.
May God bless you with peace!
