Pope’s deep breath before the plunge: Resting before the WYD - Photos inside

AFTER an early start to the day, Pope Benedict XVI is set to spend today resting at his Sydney retreat after a long flight from Rome. World Youth Day (WYD) chief operating officer Danny Casey said the Pope, who flew into Sydney yesterday after a 20-hour flight from Rome, had only one meeting today. He was resting at an Opus Dei study centre in the northwestern Sydney suburb of Kenthurst ahead of his official welcome to Sydney for WYD on Thursday. “This morning, he would have had early morning mass at the Kenthurst Chapel and then he’s got time for quiet prayer and he’ll be resting up, he’ll be taking a good sleep,” Mr Casey said on Fairfax radio. “He’ll be meeting with Cardinal (George) Pell and Bishop Anthony Fisher later in the day, just to be briefed on how preparations are going and generally this is a quiet time for him.” Mr Casey said the Pontiff was usually on holidays at this time of year. He confirmed that organisers had borrowed a kitten to keep the cat-loving Pope company and said they had tuned the piano for him.”We wanted to make it a genuine house of welcome for the Holy Father and to make it a place where he can really recharge his batteries after the longest flight he’s ever done. “He was very excited when he got off the plane. He looked a little tired, as you might expect … but he’s very focused and very excited about the week ahead.” The Pope’s first public appearance in Sydney will be on Thursday, when he arrives at Darling Harbour by boat and then goes on a motorcade through the city centre.
