My Summer 2008 (part 1): Life in the province

281

Ever since we moved here in this somewhat secluded part of the city where air is still fresh and green vegetation abounds, my life have mustered peace. Before when I used to live in the very center of commerce, I never knew peace for my body was immune to the dust and smoke of the vehicles that pass by our house. It is as if no matter how large your house were, you still feel stifled and cramped. Beginning 2005, we moved here and the experience is so awesome that I seldom go to the city, contented already with the peace that farm life brings. After years of blogging, it is only now that I have decided to share with you my busy life as a Promdi (From the Province) here in our little farm where I call home. Life here is not complicated compared to city life but the task is daunting and exhausting. But in between those bouts of toil and seemingly hard labor, nature always gives me the pleasure to behold little reminders of God’s omnipotence that we often take for Granted. Being trained in the Capuchin Franciscan heritage, animals and nature are my first love. That’s why whenever people taunt me to leave our house for a while and spend some time in the city, I can’t. I can’t bear the thought of sleeping in other bedroom aside from my own (you’ll understand later why). It’s like our new home has already been a part of my being and the nature that surrounds it controls my soul. Journey with me in my summer of 2008 here and around the nearby provinces as I take you to the window of my life as a walking contradiction (Yeah I know this is cheesy LOL)…

z8

My official day starts when roosters crow just behind my room and my dogs bark incessantly, calling my attention and telling me “Hoy Gutom na kami!” (Hey we are already hungry). Usually I woke up when the sun starts to shine through my window and the lamp shade beside my bed is left on, due to forgetfulness.

summer08 - 0 (1)

When I stand up to fix my beddings and stretch my bones, this is what nature offers beyond the iron grills of my sliding window.

summer08 - 0

The first thing I would do is to go outside through the backdoor of my room towards the terrace…

z18

And stare blankly in this vast meadow beside our house…

z20

…as the sun gradually envelopes the field with its rays. (Look at my pitbull Halle Bury, I placed his kennel far from the other dogs because she tends to kill some of them. She is a fighting pitbull by the way).

z19

Oftentimes, I go up on that water tank just to see the beauty and majesty of Banahaw mountains just there in the horizon… lumilinga muna ako kung may tao sa likod ko kasi baka bigla ako itulak sa sobrang drama ko sa umaga haha

summer08 - 0 (2)

Every Saturday and Sunday, I cannot sulk myself in my bed because as early as 6 am, my sister in California and most of our relatives in the US call us regularly via web conference. This is a typical scenario every weekend morning… My nephews, cousins, brother-in-law, aunts and uncles and my sister, are on the other side of the world seen only through my dilapidated Busero (name for my computer) and my mom and dad who talks to them with coffee in their hands and bread on the other.

summer08 - 0 (3)

As they laugh and talk (and sometimes gossip) on my room via webcam, I go to the kitchen to have my favorite breakfast of all time, my mom’s delicious sopas (macaroni soup) with one of my dad’s native chicken carcass haha. I can eat four bowls of that in a single sitting… joke but true

summer08 - 0 (8)

At our backyard, just behind my room is where my mom and dad often stays during the morning of weekends when they are free from work. For them this is the place where they enhance their nurturing abilities to tend animals and plants of all kinds. My mom and dad wanted to grow fruit bearing trees and vegetables which they didn’t able to pursue when we were still living in the city.

summer08 - 0 (9)

we have citrus trees that bears fruit all year round…

summer08 - 0 (10)

Maliit pa namumunga na…

summer08 - 0 (11)

Green eggplant…

summer08 - 0 (21)

purple eggplant…

summer08 - 0 (13)

Kangkong…

summer08 - 0 (12)

and Vietnamese kangkong that you would see in every Chowking restaurant offered as a side dish… Hindi po yan marijuana hehe

summer08 - 0 (14)

summer08 - 0 (18)

at yung hindi stripes….

summer08 - 0 (15)

May indian mango din kami…

summer08 - 0 (16)

summer08 - 0 (20)

close up natin para maglaway kayo hehe

summer08 - 0 (17)

May papaya din kami pampaalis libog…

z1

summer08 - 0 (19)

and to the delight of most chefs… mushrooms just sprout anywhere in our backyard… they are not poisonous by the way…

summer08 - 0 (23)

These are seedlings for giant tomatoes…

summer08 - 0 (22)

and seedlings for Pechay…

z17

we have so many seedlings that are waiting to be sowed by yours truly like papaya, mahogany trees, lanzones, guyabano and Chico…

summer08 - 0 (24)

But of course, it wouldn’t be our house without my mom’s flower bearing plants…

z16

z15

May is the season of flowers that’s why our front yard is blooming with fauna of different kinds especially this long stem crimson and orange roses.

z13

Alas! the pink rose bloomed!

z12

A pink Gerbera that I gave my mom during Mother’s day…

z11

She wanted this so badly so I bought four of these in a plant exhibit in the city…

z3

Her wild orchid doesn’t stop blooming…

summer08 - 0 (26)

and my mom’s prize possession… A giant red euphorbia…

summer08 - 0 (25)

and a yellow one…

summer08 - 0 (27)

A white orchid blossoming…

summer08 - 0 (31)

we have to put some nets because too much sun tends to wither them…

summer08 - 0 (28)

A tiger orchid waiting to bloom…

summer08 - 0 (29)

A blue flowering plant…

summer08 - 0 (30)

A pink Adelma on the foreground (taken before we even had our gate)…

summer08 - 0 (32)

A macro shot of the moss hanging beside the orchids….

summer08 - 0 (33)

A newly withered rose on our stairs..

summer08 - 0 (34)

our Atis tree bears its first fruit…

summer08 - 0 (35)

Yellow flowering plant below our terrace…

summer08 - 0 (36)

and a wild flower leaning against our fence just below the terrace of my room…

summer08 - 0 (37)

my collection of Cactus… I’m not fond of flowers. I’m more of a Cactus person. It represents my personality… hehe hulaan nyo na lang kung ano…

z6

it’s fascinating how life evolves and revolves in our place called home. This is the first grass ever to grow after we dumped ten truckload of gravel and sand in our front yard in preparation for our new lawn…

z10

Often times, our small farm are graced with different species of birds.. This is a large bird (haha) i don’t know the specie but I caught this bird chirping on top of my dog’s old house. This is the closest thing that I can get on that bird since I only use a phone cam…

z9

And yep, those who sleep over in our house are always disturbed by the constant crowing of our cocks (not that kind of cock silly) spread all over the backyard. These cocks are for cockfighting. My Father is not a sabungero, he is just fond of collecting roosters. Sometimes he just let our relatives enter our cock in a derby. Gambling is a no-no for my family…

z2

summer08 - 0 (38)

and aside from fowls, we have a whole enchilada of animals in our farm… lets start with our dogs

z4

who by the way are tied on their respective houses during the day and are free to roam our compound during the night… ayan gutom na naka-abang na…

z5

This one I named pupa. He grew up as a menace. See the roof of his house, he bit them to pieces. Sometimes I want to give him away in the city pound because I can’t seem to handle his tantrums, but then again I can’t bear him giving away. Kaya ayan gastos na naman, I have to replace the roof steel instead of polyurethane..

z7

and of course, among my 6 dogs, Mielle is my bestfriend and favorite dog. He’s turning four this October and I have to find a mate for him.. beagle din syempre. I have to put Halle Bury (as in libing) my pitbull because he tends to kill other gentle dogs.

summer08 - 0 (39)

May kambing din kami akala nyo… I am tasked to graze them every morning and afternoon. kala nyo senyorito ako dito sa bahay no? This is Meeeeh-ya

summer08 - 0 (41)

Meeeh-linda…

summer08 - 0 (40)

and Meeeeh-lisa haha..

summer08 - 0 (42)

When our fence was still made of bamboo, this kid (a young cow) often stays in our front yard for hours. ewan ko kung bakit. Sya na actually sumira ng bakod namin. He stays there as early as 6 in the morning…

summer08 - 0 (43)

until mid-afternoon of 3 pm…

summer08 - 0 (44)

until 6 in the evening. Nakaganyan lang sya. wala syang tali (he isn’t tied). I think this cow which I named Berta, have a relationship with our Basketball ring haha

summer08 - 0 (45)

This fly is so in love with my Internet Antenna that it never leaves it even if I shoo it away. I have to squashed it weeks after I took this shot because it interrupts my internet connection.

z14

This is my Dad’s hobby. My mom and dad grew up in a farm during their childhood days that’s why even now that they are professionals, they can’t seem to leave their old habits of tending animals. For them this is already their relaxation… being one with nature and the animals. That’s why we, their children acquired their love for living things.

summer08 - 0 (46)

and every afternoon, especially this summer of 2008, the weather changes and becomes cool and breezy. The sky becomes dark and rain threatens to fall…

summer08 - 0 (47)

The numerous chimes hanging on my window starts making noises as the summer rain is preceded by a gust of wind… Chimes are music to my ears. It helps me sleep during the cold summer nights…

summer08 - 0 (48)

and the rains fall…

summer08 - 0 (49)

showering the dried soil of the fields with its very soothing drops of water from the sky… sometimes akala nyo wala excitement dito sa bukid? aba meron din…

summer08 - 0 (50)

We often bully the Meralco people for delaying repairs in our village, especially during this summer. There are times that the lampost is already on fire and the stupid staff of the Meralco office have nothing to say but: “help is on their way” yet three days later wala pa rin.

summer08 - 0 (51)

and when I’m bored, I just punish my student nurses for their laziness and let them stand in our rice field for a whole day until their burn themselves to death under the hot summer sun… Joke lang kayo naman… this shot was taken for their Graduation/Capping invitation. My former dean asked me to make a digital design of their invitation program that’s why I asked them to stand still. I was thinking of an “alien invasion” or horror movie as their graduation theme… ti po bang “Children of the Corn”… but then again it’s not believable because it’s a ricefield and not a cornfield, so I decided to call their theme, “Children of the Porn”… ang maniwala sa akin uto uto…

summer08 - 0 (52)

and when I’m really tired, at the end of the day, I get a new VCD or DVD disc that I haven’t opened before, order a pizza, open a cylinder of pringles and watch the movie either alone or with my family in my room. Ganyan ako pagka galit. The only thing that can pacify me is pizza, pringles and a movie marathon. This is my idea of relaxation. No more no less.

summer08 - 0 (53)

Sometimes I don’t go out anymore because my friends from afar always visit me here. There is really no place like home…

summer08 - 0 (54)

The sun sets again on my window, telling me that my petty promdi adventures this summer of 2008 is aint over… till the next day….

TO BE CONTINUED…

Kapatid, what can I say?… Kailan mo ako iimbitahan sa inyong santuwaryo? It was just a ‘quasi-virtual tour’, pero it made me feel as if I have already been there. Basta, basta…. kailangan makabisita ako sa inyo paguwi ko this summer break. Parang ang sarap mag-retreat diyan… Looking at the pics of your animals, plants, flowers, etc. reminded me of ‘Brother Sun, Sister Moon’. Haayy…. Btw, cool din ang napili mong awit. Mas lalo naging cheesy ang entry. He he. See you soon!
