Bombing Meralco
By bluepanjeet on May 16, 2008 in Acid Rub

I was having my hair cut in one of my favorite barber shop in SM Mall when I overheard these two customers on the barber’s chair talking about the recent Meralco Scandal. The first man who is in his 50’s said “Pare garapal talaga yang mga Lopez ano? biruin mo halos kalahati pala sa bill natin ay patong lang ng Meralco” (Buddy, aren’t the Lopezes vilgar and thick skinned? Imagine, half the price of our bill are kickbacks). The other man who is in his mid 40’s replied “Dapat sa mga gagong yan binobomba eh” (These morons should be bombed). I can’t help but laugh because what these men are saying are true. In the recent Senate hearing, many anomalous practices done by Meralco (sister company of ABS CBN) were uncovered. Here is the list: I am warning you, do not continue reading this if you don’t want to brew hate towards Meralco
1. Meralco does business with its own companies. They buy electric meters from General Electric which is 35% owned by the company. They also by their electricity poles, power transmission units, electric meters and information technology in other Lopez owned companies which manufactures them. The catch is, if there are other companies that offer low prices for the said materials, chances are Meralco will prefer their own companies which put higher prices on the said materials.
2. Meralco charges P2.44 per kilowatt hour for distribution in Luzon versus the P1.48 in Cebu and P1.64 in Davao, and 91 centavos in Bataan. The logic is this: the higher the demand of electricity (Luzon) the lower should be the price compared to those areas wherein demands are low (Cebu and Davao).
3. Meralco is charging consumers with P2.44 per kilowatt hour instead of P1 or less per kilowatt hour.
4. Price adjustments mad by Meralco are slapped on the consumers
5. Meralco has highest power rates in the world second only to Japan
6. Excessive perks for Meralco top brass which cost a staggering P97 million for eight senior executive officers and P170 million including directors and the top management
7. Meralco?s purchase of power during peak periods that result in high pass-through generation charges to its consumers. The price of electricity during peak hours is higher compared to none peak hours.
8. Preferential rates to economic zone consumers are discounted and lower than residential areas while passing on the cost of discounts to its other consumer.
9. Meralco intends to pass the payment of their loans to consumers which amounts to 14 billion pesos.
ETO ANG MATINDI… (this is the worst…)
10. Meralco is passing on to consumers all system losses. Meaning, the cost of electricity that were stolen through illegal connections are passed to law abiding citizens.
11. 72 million kilowatt hours of electricity used by Meralco for its own corporate use were cursorily passed on to Meralco customers at a cost of P427.5 million annually. Meaning electricity used by their employees, offices, and yes my dear COPYMILYUCKS, even electricity used by ABS CBN for their SHOWS are passed through the consumers. we are the ones paying for the cost of electricity of their stupid programs and telenovelas.
My apathy towards Meralco did not originate from this list. Actually, it stemmed from what I thought were already big issues.
- like the on and off of power while your computer flickers even though you have a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) and your appliances give in one by one to the sudden surge of electricity
- their practice of hanging the phone in their office while thousands are calling them because they did not announced the power interruption
- their 48 years time frame for emergency repair men to arrive even though you called thousands of times about the burning electric post
- and the delay of promised power resumption…
these are only few of the many instances that Meralco proved that thier service suck big time. Yet I realized that the issues being tackled in the senate is bigger than this petty litany of mine.
One time I lambasted my cousin for patronizing ABS CBN so much because I told her that it is the same company that burdens us with high cost of electricity. She just shrugged off the idea only to find out later that I was right after all.
The two men inside the barber shop were too atrocious and rude when they said Meralco deserved to be bombed (just like what the militants did to ABS CBN OB vans when they lit them on fire). But come to think of it, There is a kernel of wisdom on their words.
Imagine if we bombed Meralco, their offices and their power plants? Many businesses will be paralyzed, many alleys will be rendered dark, many children could not study at night and many of us will starve to death just because we have no electricity to preserve our food. Yet it will be the sweetest revenge that all of us who are victims of these abuse and marauding can ever wish for. It will be hell on the Philipphines having no electricity and all, but its all worth it! The sweetest revenge of the masses is bombing Meralco!
Just daydreaming…

may tsismis ako about meralco pero offlimits dito. baka ako ay makasuhan. hehehe! oh well… i still stand by my stance that abs cbn is really bias when airing their news. they just report what THEY THINK is suitable for them. i can’t say anything else about their other shows because i don’t really watch tv much unless it’s totally spies.

Bombing won’t stop the problem. Another Meralco will rise from the ashes using the same corrupt system. Kinda like elections = same corruption, different politician.

I wonder where this “facts” came from. Only an independent external auditor could report that power has been used by ABS-CBN and no check payment was released covering the consumption.
Who taught you that open-mindedness is akin to opening your mind to all data, truthful or polluted, and passing them off as true?

it’s logic baby. You don’t have to taste the donuts to know that they are sweet! ergo, you don’t have to be a business analyst or an internal auditor to know the connection.
No one taught me and who said that I claim that the above bulleted details are true? they are all over the news for crying out loud. true or not Meralco services still sucks.
How much did Meralco pay you to comment on my blog with your crap?
If you are a true blue business analyst, then you also suck big time in analyzing the burden that we non-business analyst go through everyday.

ohh kua pinsan.. Easy lang ahhaha.. Lumalabas pgkabatangenyo nten eh… i’ve read your blog (Bombing Meralco) and some of the comments that are posted as a reaction about the blog. Well, i think you’ve just given me a good reason to believe that the Lopez Group of Co. is infact manipulating the masses and prices of electricity given through Meralco. It is hard for me “At first” to believe that Lopezes will do such bias and unfair Managing in consuming electricity because i am a true born “KAPAMILYA”. When i read and rolled down my trackball through your Blog and comments, It made me think of the high prices of electricity that my parents were paying for our house situated in Tanay. Dad and mom always argue on how did we get such a high bill when we doesn’t even consume too much electricity. Infact, Mom forbid us on using too much tv, we plugged out our refrigerator and washing machine, i am not allowed to use the aircon for a month even though i need to use it so bad and etc. Because sabi nga niya “TIPID MUNA”. But whenever we recieve the bill of meralco its always been “p6,000″. I even showed the bill to my math professor and asked her if she can explain the runs and flows of meralco’s rule of price. We thought that maybe.. there’s a complication on our lines, so Dad called a Meralco E.Man to find out whats happening. However, the results were fine and there’s nothing to be worried about. So, ang dating eh parang may paDISCO kame sa bahay . When the news on TV burst out the anomalies in meralco and Lopez Group of Co. It made my parents angry knowing that they are paying too much money yet we almost pitied ourselves kasi kelangan nmen mgtipid. Consequently, I realized the main idea here. That we’ve been Biased by Meralco’s Unfair Play, THAT even though we wanted to bomb the Meralco so bad we couldn’t do it. Why? because Meralco is the one and only ELECTRIC PRODUCER of our country. Following reason, If ever, Lopez Group of company sell their 35% of share to the government, WILL THE GOVERNMENT GIVE US THE FAIR PRICES FOR THE ELECTRICITY? i doubt it. hehehe.. Un lang po for now.. Antok na ko eh,,. Basta ako?? I JUST WANNA WATCH TV. HELL I DONT CARE ABOUT LOPEZ.. BUHBYE!! nice blog nga pla kua! nkapag post tuloy ako. hihi
